deer eating a live bird - 07/28/20 02:47 AM

2 weeks ago I had some grackle birds eating on a piece of chicken I had thrown down. But I would not believe a deer eating a live bird if it was not on a movie.

In quail research on nest predation they have shown that deer eat A LOT of quail eggs and chicks. They believe, or maybe they know and I just don't know they now know, they the deer get some kind of essential nutrient from them.

Haven't seen that video from 2010 in years but at least that deer ate a bird. I have no doubt it happens and that deer can and will eat quail eggs, good source of protein and nature finds a way. I have watchd bucks strip velvet from the antlers then eat the velvet, another good source of protein.

I've seen deer eat turkey eggs that were cracked by mowing. I'd imagine most if not all deer would feed on live protein if its available.

My uncle had a pet deer when I was a kid and it would eat table scraps, including meat, all day long.

Whitetailed deer used to have canine teeth and every once in a while one is shot that still has the upper canine teeth. They have evolved over time and probably were more carnivorous a long time ago.

I once watched a young 10pt eat a pile of turkey feathers left over from a bird that was shot the day before. Unfortunately this was before I started carrying a camera with me

That's an old video. First time I saw it was 4 or 5 years ago. It has been on youtube for a long time.
