Rice Bran - 07/09/20 05:25 PM

Anybody ever tried Rice Bran? I was in East Texas this week and found it in a Walmart store. For $8 a #50 bag I figured I would give it a shot.

Careful if you have cows because they'll tear up everything to get to it.

So will the deer in SE Ark. where I hunt. doesn't take much to get the deer started on it. A big cereal bowl full within sight of your blind will get the job done. Daniel

And when it rains it’s ruined, however, deer love the stuff, as do many other creatures.

Peanut/peanut butter flavor has always worked for me in ne tex.
Put a pile out and sprinkle some bush leaves to let the wind easily carry the scent.

Never had much luck with it on my leases in east Texas.

Tried it on my place in Arkansas. Deer would not eat it. Mixed it with corn, deer very carefully picked the corn out and left the bran. Even tried the peanut butter flavor, same result. Would end up shoveling it into the garbage.

I bought 2-50lb bags of it last summer from Walmart...just over $7/bag. I mixed it with corn and put out 1 to 2 1# coffee can of it in each feed pen. Deer barely at the corn out of and birds scattered the rest to get the corn. If it rained the deer would not touch the corn in it. I kept putting it out for about 45 days with no luck. Even put it outside a feed pen by one bow blind...hogs would not even touch it it. Finally mixed it in a tub with corn and added water to bait hogs into traps. I used the last of it in May this spring.

Our deer wouldn't touch it in west Texas. It really surprised me.

If they will eat it, it'll sure help to put some fat on em and make their coats nice and shiny. Used to feed it to my horses and they slicked off nice once we started them on it.

I would try rice bran pellets. I tried plain rice bran for a while without much luck (mixed a 1 to 1 ratio with corn) but when I switched to the pellets and same ratio deer seemed to eat it a lot better.

Used rice bran and had decent luck. However if it rains it ruins quickly

If you're not feeding rice bran in East Texas, you're missing the boat.....

we feed it to our horses - it is nothing but fat - I would think cottonseed does the same and cheaper

It dang sure works on my place South of Bowie. If it gets wet, just kick it a couple of times to get the top crust off.

I put it out at the place in Childress and it just rotted on the ground. A couple of does would try it. I was told it was like cocaine for deer. My deer must be clean. Deer are funny, some areas I know that they would be all over it.

I tried it a couple years ago, it took the deer a while, but they eventually ate it. It goes rancent pretty quick, unless i got a couple old bags to start with. The cows really like it.

I see what you did there. At least I think. I try to get extra sleep at night so I will be sharp enough to catch Huds cryptic posts.
