Have access to a place I can hunt East of Brenham. Anyone ever hunted this area? It’s 80 acres mostly all wooded with 20’ trails cut throughout it. I never have hunted this area and wondering about the class of deer. I know it is loaded with doe.

There are some big bucks along the Brazos river east of Chappell Hill. Plenty of hogs too.

Not to be a smartass, but if you have access to a place to hunt and it doesn't cost you anything, why is there any discussion about what class of deer to expect. Unless you hear something that makes it seem not worth your time to even go just go. JMHO.

The reason for asking is because ive never hunted this part of the state and deer vary from different regions. I do not live close so being there everyday and seeing what’s in the area is out of the question. So I was hoping to hear from people who may live/hunt in this area. And yes the hunt is free, but building blinds, feeders, feeder pens, pallets of corn to feed year around, mowing, planting, protein like the surrounding hunters all do comes out to more than just “free”. Just because I’m not paying $10k for a spot doesn’t mean it’s free when I’m starting from scratch.

What he’s saying is, are you gonna turn the property down if someone tells you that you’ll never see anything over 130? Highly doubtful because your not having to pay lease dues. Any money you put into the property is up to you, not a land owner or lease manager. How much money and time you choose to put into the property is up to you, I’m assuming that leads into why your asking.
There’s decent deer in the county even away from the major water, can’t speak on your exact location however.

Yes I probably worded my answer wrong. I don’t want to spend $8-10k on an area that I do not have any idea about and could be like places I know in east Texas that are shot out or everything gets stolen within your first year. I could get a lease closer and be able to hunt more for about the same price but I couldn’t call it my own. So weighing my options.

Since it is a small property, before I would start building three or four stands and buy a bunch of feeders, why don't you right now get two or three cameras and corn some areas. See what shows up. Maybe the first year you hunt out of a pop up- allows you to be more flexible as to where you hunt. If one area isn't doing much just pick up and move. Financially you are already ahead of the game by finding something that close to Houston you can hunt for free, as was mentioned, so whatever you spend is minimal. And I don't know where you get your costs from, but I hunt two different leases with several stands, feeders, and cameras and don't have half of $8k tied up in everything. I know, I am being a smartass again, but just speaking truth.

I may have to do that this year as it’s already the end of May. With the way it’s laid out there’s only 3-4 places to put a stand. The underbrush is so thick that the current roads already in place are my only options. I’m not sure how your not even at half that unless you are hunting out of $100 ladder stand or pop ups. This is my list and that’s not including food plots, the protein that will be fed, cameras and so on. Yes I could do it a lot cheaper but i want my kids to enjoy it as well. Not throw them on a wood build ladder stand in the rain and cold and tell them here you go like we were done. I have never said I was not thankful for not having to pay to have this place, but hunting has turned into an expensive hobby whether you lease the land or hunt for free. Hope you have a great day .
