Age and Score # 12- wide!

NWTx once again. No protein. Normal dressed weights about 140 150. I killed him Nov 12 and he dressed less than that. Cam dates are wrong and iirc most pics were Sept Oct with rut last two weeks Nov. We were just coming out of the drought years. One of my other threads guys were debating spreads in the 22 to 26 range so I thought this would be a good one to look at. Besides age and score please estimate spread(inside.)







I took this pic at 175 yards after I had stalked him 1000 yards and right before I sat down with shooting sticks and shot him.


I have lots better dead deer pics of him but I didn't want yall to hafta look at my ugly mug.

I can tell you this. This deer and the other are not even in the same league when it comes to spread. Maybe I am missing something but there is no comparison IMO. Awesome buck no matter what his spread is - he is an awesome trophy for any part of Texas -

Speaking of wide, one of my best friends that's hunted this lease with me a long time and is my right hand man used to hunt STx a lot a few years ago. He killed a buck 7" wider than this buck and it had matching 3" double drops. He was actually kinda ugly and didn't score a whole lot more than this guy but boy was he wide.

Hes lighter weight body than Okla but I don't know about 70 #s. He mentioned the weight and the small ears as a comparison to the width on the other deer.

Probably closer to 50lbs, I added more because you said coming out of drought years.

It’s a shame those long genetics didn’t translate as much from a width to a height aspect, but dang I would love one that wide.

My guesses, since I don’t think the mass carries well on those long beams...

I would argue he is 4.5, but in a drought year he may not be showing his age well so could waffle on the age +\- 1 year.

Guys, don't let my drought comment throw you off. The drought was pretty much 10 and 11 and this was 12 and we were ok. Just for what that's worth.

This is what I was going to go with as I have a 20"+ buck and this one is wider and more points.

This one was 146'' and 23 1/2 @ 61/2 YO and looked like he was a lot wider in the cam pics for sure

Threelranch, that buck is nice, but I can see a couple more inches on free ranges. Just looking at the rifle stock. It appears the whole stock would fit inside his where yours would be covering the inside, it appears.

Yes pics can be deceiving, but assuming a 13inch ear spread and 4” ears, his buck has an extra ear plus a little on the right and at least an extra two on the left. I estimated 5 inches outside the ear on the right and an extra 8 on the left...13+13 = 26. I wouldn’t be surprised if I was short.

Threelranch buck looks like this one we killed this year. I won’t give stats cause I may post him as an age score later.


When the tines splay out to side like that they look even wider/bigger but no credit on score.

I say 4.5 23" wide Back still straight, brisket barely protruding, little belly sag and normal rump.

First pic I am copying he has a body that could be taken for 3.5, as a matter of fact I bet if you did not show the antlers that would be most people guess. The next one his face looks 5.5 Beautiful buck

Sneaky, you're probably right if that comparison wide one scored at 146". This one is probably wider and has longer tine length and likely more mass as well. I'll revise up to 5.5yo and 158".

Yes it does make them a little wider than they are that is for sure , we watched this buck for 4 years and i think he actually may have had a little more mass the previous year . We have him on camera a lot and he just looked like he was going to be about 26-28'' wide in some of the pics and thats why i would put yours a little lower just based off of the TC pics but seeing him on the ground i'll say he is ........165 and 26'' also bet he is about 6 1/2 as well . Great looking buck , what area was this in if you don't mind me asking .

I don’t know, Stub. I’m not great at guessing scores on deer that big. I’ll bet he’s well past 150, though.

freerange, I have no doubt that I am probably shorting him some and usually do. I'm rarely over on my 'on the hoof' scoring'.

I still think he was 6.5 though and probably at least 25" IS.
Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he busted 160", especially if he is over 25" inside.

AND THE WINNER IS;;;;;;;;;; Officially BC scored for TBGA at 159, 25 1/8 wide and 25 beam. Lot of uncertainty on age but most at lease thought 5 and tooth wear appeared to show that. We weren't sending teeth to lab back then. Thanks for playing along and hope it offered some insight and entertainment. The other 10 age and score threads the deer are still alive--feel free to chime in more on them.

So 5.5 and 158" was a decent estimate. You have some great specimens Freerange!

OK, I feel good about the age and the width, but boy did I miss out on the score.

With me its always Gross unless specified. I have an appreciation for net but for me the scores are important for record keeping in order to evaluate management progress so gross makes sense. Most of yall missed him low for sure.
dont have score sheet handy but other approximate measurements were brows 5, left 7 9 6. right 11 11. Bottom 105, top 54.

I missed the gross under (gave it 100) and the right side length.

Freerange - great threads you put together! Good stuff and fun to follow. Takes some work I know to find and put together all the pictures. I have hundreds of pictures over our years on our ranch and it is a challenge to keep up with them all -

I got him at 163" gross and 24" inside.

155 to 160 5.5 years old is my guess .... edited. I just saw the official. So I was close.

There was a 9 like that killed on the Matthew's Lambshead Ranch back in the mid 90's that scored 165. He was a little taller than this buck and was a war horse. Got pictures of his possible sire after I was tagged out. Big typical 12. Biggest dear I ever saw.

I get 104 to 106 down with 52-54 up. He looks to have about the same spread as a buck I killed up in Kent County back in the late 90's..24 6/8" inside so around 25" give or take a shade. He had some long beams and pretty good tine length for a 9pt frame. Pretty buck.

Love having you back STX, but that dang bug....gets me every time
