ADVICE PLEASE - Throckmorton City - Woodson, Tx

I am very interested in a piece of land SE of Woodson, Tx, in Throckmorton County. Other than bird hunting one time, I have no hunting experience in the county. For any willing to share, how is the area deer hunting, generally speaking? Everything about the property looks right - terrain, cover, forage, water, neighbors.

Kinda up to you what is there and around you. Seen some giant deer taken there.

A lot of people/hunters would maybe tell you that Throckmorton county going NW from the DFW metromess is where the B&C Whitetail bucks really start to become more abundant in #s, sightings, etc. further supported by currently "no AR or Antler Restrictions". Most counties eastward from there to metromess have the ARs in place. I personally do not have a ton of experience hunting there but do hunt the county just east of it, Young county and about 15-20 miles from Woods and can say that there are very nice Whitetail in that area so would think no different near Woodson. Having said that, I will state that there is a good amount of hunting pressure and all that comes of it (nocturnal deer movement, some poaching, quite a few hunters, etc.) in those two counties, both being less than 2.75 hours from the metroplex. As with anything, your surrounding neighbors and their hunting habits, good or bad will have a likely impact on your hunting..

I have always heard good things about Throckmorton deer hunting. Common sense would dictate that if you are buying a small tract (under 100 acres) around a lot of other small tracts that have heavy hunting pressure then probably just decent deer hunting unless neighbors really practice reasonable game management. Now if you are on a small to large tract with large neighbors with little pressure then you should have good quality deer hunting like most places that far away from a large population!

If you can provide feed , wheat fields , water & cover you could hold and grow some good deer

Google earth satellite on the neighboring properties and see how many deer blinds they have up and that might tell you all you need to know.

Lot of pressure on the deer in that area, if there is enough acreage it could be a good place, but a small tract won't hold them.

Throckmorton county can be great. The genetics and habitat is there. Its the same as everywhere though, the problem is letting them get the age. IF IF IF your goal is to hunt Trophy deer year in and year out then you will need to control a very large area. If not then you will need to have very large neighbors and hope they practice good management practices, which is seldom the case it seems. Throckmorton and counties going West and North GENERALLY have a lot of large to very large Ranches. Those large Ranches that also keep the hunter numbers low will always have great chances for big deer.

One of my favorite leases of all time was East of Woodson on 209. Lease was split and very different hunting on each tract. The piece with hardwoods and creek bottom was very productive and numbers were good. Other tract was mesquite with some wheat. Not as many deer but decent quality. The tracts were only a few miles apart off the same road too. Land owner sold it is probably the only reason I am still not hunting there.

Yep, lots of small tracts that are over hunted.......but a good tract that's managed with good neighbors can produce some great hunting..........hunted east of there off 209 on 1000 acres many years ago.......we killed some nice bucks, lot's of hogs and turkeys too.

All of these takes are solid and accurate. I hunt a place east of Woodson and over the last 8 years have started to produce some deer that will get your heart rate going. Have not harvested one yet but they are there. For purchase I would certainly want both hardwoods and mesquite. There are enough wheat fields around so that would not be as big of a criteria but definitely would want both types of habitat. Would love to hear how big of a place you are looking at out of curiosity.

I hunted with Woodson Hunter and Pervis on the THF. Both properties are great , so no doubt with allot of $$ and sweat, the land you're looking at buying, you can make it "yours"

I have hunted Throckmorton and Haskell Counties for about 15 years now. Plenty of B&C Deer Depending on Land and people around you. I have a wall full of big Deer from those areas. I hunt 750 acres in Haskell and have Hunted 10,000 in Throckmorton all good areas. Go for it can loose money on land.

Average nice deer are in the 120s-130 with the ability to harvest 140+ with the right habitat, game management practices and of your surrounding neighbors as well. Also can be lots of turkey, varmints, hogs, Sandhill cranes and at times very good dove hunting as well and the occasional decent quail hunting. I hunted 35+ years down in Webb/Zapata counties and the topography with the mesquites reminds me somewhat of South Texas and with the proliferation of game management, the deer sizes on average are not that different when comparing average to slightly above average leases/ranches. The deer densities on average are where things diverge somewhat. In South Texas it was rather common to corn senderos and see between 15-25 deer per sitting, usually multiple 120s+ bucks in those sittings. Outside of having wheat fields or maybe oat fields in the Cross Timbers, probably not as usual to simply corn roads and see those types of deer densities. From my friends that hunt Cross Timbers, I hear more the norm being 5-10 deer per sitting on better managed properties. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the area.
