Youth late season question

Youth late season question - 12/28/19 11:38 PM

I hunt in Llano county. My 14 yr old has gotten into hunting with me the past 2 seasons. Last year we gave the lease back to the landowner and his family for all the late season. This year we have the first week of “doe and spike”. It seems that the youth season runs during that time as well. Am I to understand that youths (16 and under) are allowed to take antlered deer during that time as opposed to just “doe and spike”. I’ve read the regs backwards and forwards and can convince myself either way. What say the crowd.....

Without consulting the book, I always went with the view the youth late season meant they can shoot anything where adults can take doe and spikes. I think you should be fine with that view unless there is a specific reg in the book for your county.

From: Taken from TPWD: Youth Only Seasons - Whitetail Deer:

Bag Limits, take of antlerless deer, and special requirements:
  • In Austin, Bastrop, Caldwell, Colorado, Comal (East of I-35), De Witt, Fayette, Goliad (North of US 59), Gonzales, Guadalupe, Hays (East of I-35), Jackson (north of US 59), Karnes, Lavaca, Lee, Travis (East of I-35), Victoria (North of US 59), Waller, Washington, Wharton (North of US 59), and Wilson counties, the bag limits, requirements for the take of antlerless deer, and special requirements are the same as the period Nov 28-Dec 1 for each respective county.
  • For the remainder of the state, the bag, tag and permit requirements are the same as for the first two days of the general season in the county.

Llano County falls under the second condition so the bag limits "are the same as for the first two days of the general season in the county.", which is "Bag Limit 5 deer, no more than 2 bucks, all seasons combined."

I do hear the youth-only season referred to as a "doe and spike season," no such thing. It is an excellent time to try to take some of the mature+ bucks that have slipped through the other hunters. I've got a hit list for a long weekend of youth hunters; give me at least two antlerless deer, and they can work that list as well.

Spoke to game warden. Youth (16 and under) can shoot any antlered deer during the “doe and spike” season as long as their is a a concurrent youth season in your County
