I skinned her deer today

I skinned her deer today - 10/27/19 07:03 PM

The neighbor kid that we recently introduced to shooting got her first deer this morning. I was getting firewood and heard the shot. Waited an hour and called, and sure enough she had her first deer. I had suggested 243 factory ammo with 100 gr Nosler Partitions, and it worked like a charm. She was real excited, as was her Dad, but they had never skinned a deer before. I offered to do it, and to show them how, and to use my hoist. We had coffee and chatted and deboned the Doe, the remains of which I’ll use for coyote bait.

The kid now says she wants a big buck and a hog. She’s a hunter, that kid. Makes me happy. She’s 12, and has many years of hunting ahead of her.

Also of note is that she put the bullet in the heart. The Partition made a mess, but not a mess the equal of what my Nosler BTs do.

Thank you sir for the great person you are. Getting kids involved in this sport is a great way to see their reactions.

What you did is a great thing, but out of curiosity, why did you have HER do it under your instruction? Or do you think you showing her was enough for her to do it on her own next time?

TiggerV, the kid and her Dad had never killed a deer, much less skinned one. No way I’d give a little girl a super sharp skinning knife and point her at a hanging deer. Better to let them watch the first one get skinned, and learn how. If her Dad gets one (he missed one yesterday), he’ll skin it while I drink coffee and offer advice.

That girl told her Dad today that she wanted to get a Buck and a Hog now. That’s my kinda kid. Of course, she will have to skin deer eventually. I don’t want to be the neighborhood butcher shop.

Re: I skinned her deer today - 11/07/19 08:13 PM

Reminds me of my first squirrel kill with my new to me .410 when I was about 11. Had to have my neighborhood friend’s dad help me clean it. After that, I was able to do the cleaning for myself. Always good to see skills passed on to the next generation.

And how fortunate are we to have Youtube and other places in this day and age where just about any knowledge you seek can be found in the form of a video by others who have been there/done that, and are willing to share by filming/editing/uploading it on their nickel.

I agree...I am a "hands on" style learner, but it is nice to watch a time or two before I then get in there and do it under supervision/instruction

Good on you for helping the neighbors out cheers this world needs more people like you and less of the plethora of idiots that we seem to have these days who refuse to help anyone out in any way
