Should be a great year!

Should be a great year! - 09/03/19 01:37 AM

With all of the rain that we have received around the state this year, I am thinking this will be one of the best deer seasons Texas has had in a long time! Every deer that I have seen has been very fat and healthy. The does are all very thick and healthy even though they are nursing their young ones! The bucks all seem to be supporting above average head gear, even the young stuff ! Anyone else seeing the same thing?

Lot different south of San Antonio. I am below average for the year here and other areas are way below average. Rains were spotty in this area. Deer still look good but range conditions are getting bad. I have not had any measurable rains since July 15th and throw in a string of upper 90's to 100+ degree days on top of that. We did come out of the winter months in great shape and then the rains we did have were timely. Just not big rains like the past couple of years.

I was in Mills county this weekend and the recent heat/drought has destroyed a lot of good forage. They got their antlers early but the deer will be suffering soon. It's hard on a doe to raise young in the drought and heat.

Our place next to Clay is greenest I have seen in September. We have had rain consistently most of the summer. Luckily mowed my favorite feeder in June.

Where I'm hunting we had good rain especially during the antler growing period, and off and on rains that kept everything green and growing.
July was dry and the area is showing it, but the deer are still in really good shape, and we got lucky recently with some localized showers that helped, so the horns should be above average in my area, which is also south of San Antonio.

Down south in the Hebronville area we are a little beyond dry.

I don't know how wide spread it is, but couple that with the anthrax out west and im guessing it hasn't been that great for all of us.

From the pictures we have, it will be a good year to get a better idea of what is out there because they are hitting feed/water hard.

In Dickens county it's really dry right now with a burn ban. However we had over 17 inches of rain from March to the end of June and my place is jungle.Bucks on camera are exceptional with at least 3 10 points and several 8s. Looking forward to archery but if acorns are available most deer will be off my place until mid November.

Also looks like quail my have recovered some what from last year. saw a couple coveys of 10 or more

We had a light rain last week, not much but it wet the ground...…...In Live Oak county just east of Nueces River and Choke Canyon......The grass is burnt from 100deg+ temps and no rain for 3 months but some of the browse is still OK, persimmons and mesquite beans were prolific this year. Deer on camera look sound but could be better IMO.

About par for the course for us. Dry as heck spring, dry summer, fall starts and we got 1.6 inches last week. Just in time to green things up and lure all the deer away for the season. Dad almost stuck the pickup this weekend. Would have been fun with the tractor at home lol.
