Horse Proof Feeder

I've dealt with cows many a time, however I'm not familiar on keeping horses out of the feeder pen. I was told generic 34 inch panels aren't tall enough. I dont want to put them so high that the deer have to think twice about jumping or anything, though I doubt that will happen. I also would like a way to allow hogs in.

Long story short, keep horses out, let hogs in.

What should I do? Thanks! (Electric fence isn't an option)

Deer do not mind crawling under barb wire fences at all, and sometimes prefer to go under than over.

What about a fence tall enough to keep horses out, but low enough for deer and hogs to go under?

Fence opening on the bottom somewhere around 24"?

Elevate the hog panels off the ground to 18-21" more or less so that the deer can go under them. Just make the pen large enough so that you can get enough deer inside the pen and all the corn stays inside it also.

yep ... or a slightly different twist is what I did at one of the feeders at our place near Ozona that has feral horses that were destroying an un-penned feeder. I use full height cattle panels (50") on the side perimeter and on the front and back side of the feeder (from the stand), put in a half a hog panel. The horses hated it and now leave it alone. I also put in a gap (16"+/-) with t-posts between a couple of the panels (twisted wire 6"-8" off the ground and then another up around the top of the 50" panel to prevent the t-posts from being separated ... to allow fawn/yearlings and pigs to pass.

you could do the same using all 50" high cattle panels and merely cut out a section of the top 4-6' wide down to hog panel height ... and a gap at a couple of places between the t-posts where the panels meet.
