Is the deer and turkey hunting good in Rotan? NO! I've been in Rotan hundreds of times, have relatives who live there, and have never seen so much as a single deer in that town. Besides, although it is a small town with no police department they still frown on shooting in the residential areas. However, if you'll go about a mile out of town things change.
I live in the heart of the Hill Country on a multi-hundred acre property. I do my hunting in Fisher County. Maybe that tells you something. The particular type of land (upland, river bottom, cultivated, mesquite rangeland, "shinnery", or otherwise) will dictate which species are most abundant, but there are a number of areas where whitetails, turkeys, hogs, and coyotes can all be successfully hunted. There are a few limited mule deer in the NW corner of the county along the Double Mountain river.
On your way there, jog a little off the trail if necessary to stop by Bell's Home and Auto in Hamlin (20 miles east of Rotan). He's got a fantastic selection of hunting rifles, ammunition, handloading components, corn and deer feeder supplies, etc. He's got a website at
