Just returned from the hill country. - 12/09/18 01:57 PM

Just got back from my annual trip to Shleicher county. Had a blast as always seeing old friends but the deer hunting was terrible. In 9 days of hunting 9 of us never saw a decent deer. We usually kill 3-4 pushing 130". We saw a few mature deer but they were in the 110" range. They were coming to the feeders okay as some sits we would see 10+ bucks. We couldn't figure it out. Was it really dry while they were growing there horns? Were we missing a generation of deer that would be our 5-6 year old deer?

We live in Coleman County, a couple of hours NE of Schleicher.

For us, the last quarter of '17 and the first three quarters of '18 were DRY. The country as a whole suffered, surface water dried up, and browse wasn't what it should have been while bucks were developing antlers. This last quarter of '18 has played "catch up" so the annual average rainfall numbers for '18 look fine...but that doesn't tell the whole story, does it? I've seen years like this where antler development suffered...they'll be back when the weather cooperates. What choice do they have? cool
