What are the 4x4's in the ground for?
I see chain reinforcements running to the feeder near the tops of them. Interesting.
The 4x4's were an experiment last year. In the past I've had hogs burrow under my fencing and one time even had a cow jump over the fence (caught her on camera). The result was my feeder being torn apart. After that I had an idea to suspend the feeder from the posts which are set in 2 ft of concrete.
The idea actually worked very well. With no legs to climb up, raccoons couldn't get to the feeder. When hogs got into my pen they could do no damage. However, there was one drawback to my plan. The more corn I put in the feeder the heavier it got. The weight would cause the feeder to lose its circular shape, thus making it difficult or impossible to close the lid. In other words, the feeder barrel would become oval while the lid remained circular.
This summer I wanted to fill the feeder all the way up so it would last through the summer, so I added the feeder legs back on so the feeder barrel would retain it's circular shape. It didn't take long for the coons to climb the legs and eat through my solar charger wires.
With archery season upon us, it's too late to mess with it now. Next season I will go back to the drawing board and see how I can prevent the feeder barrel from collapsing under weight.
