Brackettville question

OK gentlemen, serious question. It seems that I have picked up a last minute spot on a lease just out of Brackettville. It is an old established lease that has been well taken care of and has experienced hunters. My question is this; aside from corn,what attractant do yall use? It is a cattle ranch and mostly very rocky ground, so installing a feeder pen will be a challenge.My friend who is on the lease has a few pictures of cattle around his feeders, but not as many as you would think. Nothing damaged or anything either. Input and comments welcome!

Use one by one square tubing on hog panels welded together and try to get a couple anchor points to keep the hogs from lifting it up. You can make the panels at home/shop and haul them to the lease for assembly. If you don't like the lease easy to move and will last a long time. Just need a trailer to haul to the lease. Goodluck!

I use protein mixed with corn in a 55 gallon spin feeder. Started protein last year and saw immediate improvement in quality and quantity of deer herd, If cattle have not damaged your feeder, give it some time...IT WILL HAPPEN.
I agree with Trsackman, get some cattle panels and wire or weld them together and make sure they are staked down.
When I bought my ranch, there were cattle on it, with the cattle gone the hunting improved overnight.

Bracketville - home of the Buffalo Soldiers and Black Seminoles. Supposedly still holds a population of folks speaking Seminole Creole. Pretty fascinating.

Also home of The Duke's Alamo set.

My buddy has a lease that is just northeast of the Foyt Ranch and the deer hammer the cotton seed. He has photos of the axis laying on it and eating it.

You can build feed easily without setting or driving any post. Search old threads here for one that Murph posted on showing how he built feed pens in that same area. Really easy way to do it. Build a large enough pen(12 panels min.) so you can get a lot of deer inside and it will work really well for you. Let others worry about cattle and hogs. You can add alfalfa, protein feeders, WCS, etc inside the pen. The key to a feed pen is to keep all the feed/corn far enough away from the perimeter fence that livestock can not reach it. Good luck.

If you don't have a feeder pen, be sure and put a T-post in the ground for each leg of your feeder. Some put the feeder near tree's and tie a heavy wire from the feeder barrel to a tree in 3 directions. They won't knock it over but anything can get to the corn.

Had a lease for several years in the same area near the Foyt ranch. Fed corn and protein year around. Deer also loved Rice bran meal and alfalfa. Good fresh alfalfa has a real strong smell that’s sure to bring them in from far away.

As good as a deer hunt to hear those history stories.

Something that works very well for connecting the cattle panels are the Ubolt type clamps used for steel cable. 3 per joint and overlap by one row of squares. use that for building round pns
