2018-2019 Prospects

2018-2019 Prospects - 01/09/18 01:12 AM

This past year was pretty frustrating, rewarding but still frustrating, because I hunted quite a bit more than usual and I never once saw a "good" buck. I did take two, a 6pt cull and a 5 1/2 yr old 10pt. My hopes before the season was probably a little too optimistic. All that being said I consistently saw a lot of young bucks and quite a few with potential I believe. The best buck I saw this year was a 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 year old eight point that as of this past weekend was still alive. So my hopes are running high on this coming year.

How did your season go? How do you feel about this coming years prospects?

I have great expectations. Saw a few good younger bucks. The one I really hope I see is a mainframe 10 with kickers on both his g2's and some trash on his bases. I did watch him once for about 15 minutes eating but had broke off his G3 and G4 on his left side. He was mature but not old as dirt. Hopefully with food plots now and what I'll plant in the sring he will be bigger and badder next year!

I killed a mature 11 point. What makes that so satisfying is all the years I didn’t.

Perspective always helps.

I have high hopes for next season. Saw more young bucks this year than ever before. Should be some nice bucks available.

I saw a surprising number of good bucks very late in the season, despite noticing a lot of shooting and hunter activity in the area throughout the first half of the season. In retrospect, much of the shooting was probably hunters taking hogs and does. It likely caused the bucks to stay more active at night until the final weeks of the season when food became much harder to find. My last hunt was this past Saturday morning when I watched four bucks work my food plot, one of which was a very nice eight that should be a hoss next season. I also suspect two other good bucks that I saw one another nearby tract will be awesome deer next season.

I'm definitely seeing a trend where hunting gets very good late in the season after all those who hit the woods heavy during the first half of the season when browse was much more abundant have given up and let the woods go quiet again. Like last year, I took a nice buck this season during the week between Christmas and New Years.

I just pulled Camera Chips to see what survived this season and I was amazed at pictures of bucks that I never saw during hunting season. I am excited to see how much bigger they get by next season.

All of our big bucks on camera down in south Texas have yet to be seen to be harvested. They show up late at night, maybe once a week but we have yet to see them during the daylight. I've heard biologist say that its been too "green" and the deer didn't have to move. We still have 2 more weeks of buck season. If we don't see these bucks than next season should be great again. I did harvest a 150 inch 10-pointer, but this buck was never seen on camera all season long.

We did well on culls and management deer. Next year I hope to see any of these that got passed on this year. Still may get passes but I hope they show up again.

Just a little time and patience and a ton of work, but it's all worth it! Can't wait to see pics this season hook.

Montague. Put feeder up in September and hit the lottery. Killed a high 150's off same stand this year.

Had 3 really nice 140 plus bucks on camera in September. Had about 7 to 10 8 points during gun season and about an additional 10 smaller bucks. Heard a lot of shooting this year so not sure of what survived. Did have about 6 to 8 Bucks with broken racks so I'm hoping they got a pass. Running my feeders through march so I'm hoping I'll see survivors. Hopefully a good number survive so we have an exceptional season next year.
