Shoot? - 12/19/17 04:02 AM

What do we think? Would probably be the biggest deer we've ever taken off of our place.

I would!

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 04:18 AM

Thats what I'm thinking. My grandpa wants to let it go another year, but I think it's too old and that letting it go would be a gamble.

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 04:31 AM

I’d let him go for at least two more years

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 04:37 AM

Looks young to me. Who cares what people think though. If it's the biggest buck ever off your place, do what you will.

He's mature, just rutted down.

If it's his place i would defer to his wishes. If it's a lease y'all are trying to manage to improve the herd I'd also defer to him. If it's just a least y'all are on it's your call....like him then shoot him....

A lot would depend on your management plan, the size of the place, and pressure from neighboring properties...

I would give him a couple more years.

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 01:45 PM

My opinion is, if any buck is going to be your biggest buck ever, it’s ok to shoot it regardless of age. I don’t think you should ever pass up on a personal best, unless you know 100% there are bigger deer on the place. In this case, it sounds like there isn’t. Bust him.

This is a family decision. THF shouldn't be involved.

'Very glad to see family hunting together.

I wouldn't, if you want meat shoot a Doe. Give him another year, see what he'll do.

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 03:16 PM

He looks about 5 to me.

If grandpa is paying for any of the freight that your not, honor his wishes.

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 03:17 PM

Funny how pictures can change your thinking on a deer's age just by the way they are standing. In picture two he looks older with a sway back, little belly sag and brisket protruding, picture 3 he looks younger back straight, flat belly and no brisket sag.

If it is your grandpa's land, I would do exactly what grandpa says up

Agreed,if low fence, small acreage, few other nice bucks seen in the area you may never see him again! DRT under those circumstances if it was me.

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 05:18 PM

That's easy - honor Grandpa's wishes, regardless of whether he's paying for the lease or owns the land. He's Grandpa! And you have a LOT more years left to hunt than he does.

I thinks he's 5 and ready for harvest But...I wouldn't go against my Grandpa.

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 07:26 PM

Looks like he has some growing to do. I'd pass. It will give you something to dream about over the off season.
Posted By: kman2017

Re: Shoot? - 12/19/17 07:32 PM

He's not against shooting it, he thinks it's young, I think it's mature. We've seen a lot of decent 8 points, both young and mature.

I'm gonna say 4yo or middle aged as would best describe him based on those pics. I don't think he is fully mature though. Good luck either way.

take a doe, let him go....

Re: Shoot? - 12/22/17 07:55 PM

If my paw told me to let him grow I didn't half to ask twice! I knew what would happen if I shot something he told me not too!
Do yourself a favor and see what he looks like next year and keep peace with your family, no need to get anyone upset over a small buck.
