young county reports?? - 12/11/17 06:17 PM

Just want to see if anyone is having any luck in Young County? Only luck we've had is we found a nice little cafe close to the lease with a killer chicken fried steak on Saturday nights

If it got any better we wouldn't know what to do,,, wait, there are no deer in Young county, or they are all nocturnal.

Re: young county reports?? - 12/11/17 06:22 PM

Hunt a wheat field that last year I would see 30-60 deer an evening in...thisbyear we see stuff come out right at minute before legal shooting ends. Totally different from last year. Isn’t anything we have done that’s for sure. Nocturnal animals are usually the product of hunting pressure. We do hear more shots this year than last.

Interestingly, the deer we see this year have been predominantly Bucks and not doe, a complete opposite from last year too. Weird. Figured this past weekend would be great given the temps, it wasn’t.

Before season during bow and youth season, we saw lots of action. Both good bucks and doe. Just never took any shots. I guess we should have been more trigger happy

Re: young county reports?? - 12/11/17 06:32 PM

A lot of activity recently, this past Saturday evening I saw 7 different bucks and three doe within about an hour sit. I took a nice 10 with split brow tines two weeks ago. I haven't really seen any rutting "activity" to speak of. Although, I think we're on the backside of the rut.

Last few weeks have been very slow in Young county. At least on our family ranch.

One word. Slow. Worst in 5 years on my place.

Re: young county reports?? - 12/11/17 09:38 PM

We've seen plenty of deer, several spikes and numerous young bucks, seems to be more young bucks than young does, and haven't seen nearly as many doe as last year. It has been a strange season, but next year should be better. Only have a couple shooters on camera. Not as many legal bucks on camera as last year. Don't know where the big bucks are hiding. We are hearing lots of coyotes!

Re: young county reports?? - 12/12/17 03:29 AM

SLOW is an understatement. My place is heavily wooded and there are acorns in some trees and everywhere you step. Hunted this place 11 years, never seen the lack of deer movement as I have this season. Corn at a few feeders piling up and NO PICS of a shooter buck since October. Gonna hunt the week after Christmas, hope conditions improve.

Slow it's been a weird year plus the rut is over....

Anyone with some updates around Murray? Headed out this week, hoping the acorns are gone and deer are finally moving like normal again. Please advise and thanks.

Re: young county reports?? - 12/18/17 01:41 AM

Was at the lease from Tuesday night tI'll this morning. Still pretty slow in our area, saw the same group of doe just about every other sit. I didn't see any horns, my buddy says he saw a big ol mule of a buck about 450yds out Saturday evening trailing some doe and a nice 8pt this morning but he was pretty young so he let him walk. Popped of coyote Wed afternoon and took a pig Saturday afternoon, weighed in at 175lbs..new record for our place(not a whole lot of pig traffic anymore). We're heading out this weekend as well...I've got a good feeling.

Well I'm not a huge pig hunter but ive heard when the pigs come back to corn the acorns are gone. I feel good about it too. Good luck man!

Re: young county reports?? - 12/18/17 02:32 AM

Me neither, I won't go looking for them but if they show up while I'm deer hunting they get shot at. I heard that as well. Best of luck to you as well!

I'm west of Murray a bit and north of Woodson and it's been real slow.

Hunted this evening shouldn't really count it was 78 when I got in the blind. Killed 3 wasps and a yote. Lots of pig and deer tracks in the mud. No moon and still nocturnal. We'll see what happens with this front. Saw a doe and a buck after dark right at 578 and 183.

Good luck !

Re: young county reports?? - 12/22/17 02:00 PM

We saw 3 good bucks (for the area) hop out of the feed pen when we drove by with a trailer load of round bales about 4 pm yesterday. 2 young doe on the edge of mesquites a little further down our road.
3 doe & a young scraggly 5 point watching me unload & transfer hay into storage area from about 120 yards.
We saw another 4 deer while disconnecting trailer & parking tractor. Quite warm yesterday.

Had a cold front move in early this am with light rain & sprinkles so we both decided to hunt, figured weather would get them moving.
North wind gusty & howling at times, wife is in blind on the other side of the property, oaks to her right mesquite & bedding area to left corn feed in between, I'm about 80 yards from a natural travel corridor in heavy oaks dry creek bed running through it corn feeder on edge.
With this wind it is seriously cold right now.
We ain't seen doodly squat, guess they're still bedded down.

Good to hear from you. Finally started to see some deer moving over in Murray. Deer still won't come to feeders but hitting the roads I corned. Looking forward to a chilly dry morning with lighter winds.

Re: young county reports?? - 12/23/17 05:12 AM

Hope you have good luck.
Neither of us saw a deer today which is unusual on our place. Wife did her hour walk after lunch to the south pasture & checked on the bulls she didn't see a thing, not even a rabbit.
I didn't see anything at our place about 6 miles north of HQ when I put out some round bales after lunch, last time I didn't see a deer on that place was late August.
At least in this area I think the rapid temp drop wind & drizzle locked them down.
Acorns on ground still viable & tons of them, deer don't have to move more than a few yards to get a belly full.
We don't rely on corn, our blinds are set up between bedding, oaks & travel paths the feeders are the last place we pay attention to. The only time I sit in a box is when it is raining. Deer cant easily pattern you if you're always somewhere different.
When hunting in a county where it seems like the hunters out number the deer you either go hunt them or sit in a box and wait on luck.

Re: young county reports?? - 12/24/17 02:21 AM

Fellow Murray area hunters, haven't hunted in 3 weeks. Upon leaving the lease last trip out, I found an abundance of acorns on the ground and numerous trees with them in the caps. My feeders all had corn under them, appeared to be a throw or two on the ground. Really interested in looking at cam cards to see what's been going on. I believe DQ & 4weight hunt in this general area, just curious if you guys have hunted since this last front or plan on hunting after Christmas. I'll be out there Tuesday @ noon. Thanks

Re: young county reports?? - 12/24/17 02:28 AM

Well Rut I'm afraid it's been more of the same. Deer are just not coming to feeders. I corned the main road artery of my place and saw three deer in 4 sits. My pens have corn in them and it's piling up. I have 1 cam going on my PF and saw doe in the last week or so hitting the protein but mainly at night. Have not seen any of the Bucks I've had on that cam thru September show up. I'm frustrated to say the least. Back out Wed to Fri next week will touch base when out. Good luck amigo and Merry Christmas.

Corn was under feeders, just a few pics of doe and 1-2 smaller bucks.

Hate to hear that DQ, looks like it might be a short trip. Thanks for the heads up.

NRut it's better than working if you're like me your covered up in coyotes. Shot 3 and pretty good pig too. Way too many song dogs around my place.

Next week with sustained cold weather may help can't be much slower. I also have lots of yotes, maybe even a buried den under some large boulder type rocks on my western side of property, sure sounds like it predawn.
Posted By: DQ Kid

Re: young county reports?? - 12/24/17 03:23 AM

I know some rattler dens are there so I haven't researched it much.
Posted By: n_rut

Re: young county reports?? - 12/24/17 03:59 AM

As far as the coyote situation, we're just covered up with them. Called up & killed 2 last trip out at night. If the deer hunting is slow, we'll hunt all night and sleep all day. As far as the rattlers are concerned, I'm guessing you GAS them out of the dens? Like to see that done just one time. Cold temps can't hurt anything, just hoping the rain holds off, small chance daily next week.

Tough times guys, hunted yesterday evening and this am until 11:00. Seen 1 4pt. and 2 yearling doe. How is it going for others in the Murray area? Calm winds and cold temps, hope it improves. Good luck out there!

Re: young county reports?? - 12/27/17 10:04 PM

Saw just the 8pt. I grunted inlate yesterday morning while hunting morning/afternoon yesterday. Been slow, in about 5 total days hunted this season seen a nice 10pt and spike right before Thanksgiving and yesterday's 8 pt. Seen a lot more oncamera, mostly at night.

Re: young county reports?? - 12/29/17 02:14 AM

Packed my things this morning and headed to Rockwall. In 4 hunts, I managed to see 1 4pt. buck and 2 young doe. I’m somewhat puzzled by this season and the lack of deer movement. In large part, the acorn crop is unlike I’ve ever seen on my place. Upon driving the cart back to the barn this morning, the road was littered with acorns in spots. The problem is they were green acorns and some with caps attached. I personally have never seen edible acorns on the ground this late. Oh well, be back out the last weekend and see if we can make something happen. Good luck to those hunting the rest of the week.

I hope you get one! It's been tough this season. I had the best deer movement I've seen this year Tuesday and Wednesday morning with cold weather. Good luck!

Re: young county reports?? - 12/29/17 04:22 AM

Saw several doe yesterday PM during the coldest stretch. Still no bucks. Friends son shot a 200 pig early am today and during low wind cloudy cold almost perfect weather we did not see a deer today. Weird year continues. After them in the am then back home.

I'll be going out next weekend hopefully get my son one a spike we've seen on camera. Same here not much activity. Strange we had some nice bucks that we let walk last year. One which was seen last day of the season and we didn't see them this year.
