Liver shot deer

I shot a buck and a doe this weekend and hit too far back on both of them (I have my excuses for the mis-hits) and both deer dropped in their tracks. That's a better result than I usually get with lung shots. Has anyone else had quick kills with liver shots or did I get lucky.

Liver is very vascular they will bleed out for sure. But I don't think that would account for dropping them in his tracks. I shot a deer this week it blew out a 5 inch chunk of liver, but he still ran about 30 yards and then dropped.

It seems they all act different. I have blown out liver or heart and had to track a deer 100 yards or better, and I have had them dropped right where they stood. You never can tell.

The only time I’ve had a deer drop in its tracks is by CNS disruption. Brain or spine shot deer. Maybe you were high as well as back...

If it happens again, post it up I'm willing to try any thing. Shot one Saturday in the lungs that I coulda driven up to, but nooooo. He ran about 250 yard down a draw before crocked. Had ta drag him back up hill by my lonesome... I'm gettin to old fer that stuff! LOL

I've had many deer drop in their tracks with lung shots. Most don't but a certain percentage do. A bullet that expands well makes it more probable. Both these deer were not shot high.

Shoot high shoulder and you'll drop a lot more in their tracks.

I never aim for behind the shoulder. Droppin deer without hitting shoulder or spine is'nt something the I've witnessed. My kid and ex wife always aim behind the shoulder and hit lung. I hate trying to find a deer that ran hard after shot and does'nt bleed. Brake down the shoulder and hit multple vitals at once. Shooting soft spots like behind the shoulder in my mind does'nt create as much energy collected from the bullet on impact and internally. Like zippin an arrow through them. Arrow shot deer behind tge shoulder more often than not make a strong run just like a bullet shot deer. It's hard to run with a broke leg, shoulder, or shoulders.

Have seen many deer cleanly shot behind the shoulders that didn't hit spine or either leg that died where they stood. I have seen deer shot straight through the paunch of the gut that fell over and died, but not with a 223.
