We need a good freeze to put them into hibernation!
That is somewhat a myth. They still come out on cold days when it warms to 55 or more. They just don't move far from the den so most aren't seen unless you go looking for them in the wrong places. It has been well below freezing and then when it warms up, some come out up here in Montague. You would have to jump on them for anything to happen though. I don't let the kids roam around anymore as they have ran into several in Dec when I thought they would be hibernating. Kids normally play in places we don't though. Myself, son and daughter have missed stepping on rattlebugs by inches in the past year. I have killed 5 this year.
