2.5 gonna be a great deer if you can hold off a couple more years

First 2 pics looks 2.5. 3rd pic looks a year older. Not knowing where the deer resides, I could be off one direction or the other. Darn nice buck.

Lol, doesn't look like a 2.5 yo buck or a 3.5 based on those prior year pics. I stated 4.5 I the previous thread you posted him in, and wouldn't vary much more than 5.5 based on past years...might be 5.5 this year but hard to tell. Did he jump a lot of antler this year from Last or is he about the same? If he made a decent jump I would take 5.5...no way he was a 2.5 last year so nothing younger than 4.5....

Do you have a rough idea, been watching him for a few years or just last year?

Agree buckeye, no deer there younger than 4.0

These two pics are from 2015. It was real cold out and my hands were shaking. Hard to see in these blurry cell phone pics but I counted 15 points on him. Had him at 18 yards.

I'd say at least 4...good looking deer

Were your hands shaking because of cold or adrenaline...I don't think I would feel
Cold if he walked up looking like that. Nice looking deer back then.

I don't think that's the same buck you posted at the top. Brow tines usually don't change that much from previous years.

Could be possible but I'm pretty sure its him. In 2015 he had those exact same matching flyers off both sides. He has a very distinctive shape to his antlers that I don't see in any other deer out there. I've got his 2014 shed and it may be his biggest.

If that's all him then he is old far beyond his time. Hard to get a clear look, but going from your 2015 cell phone pic I would guess he was fully mature then already. If you said he had his best rack in '14 then that is further proof.

Yep, given all the information provided, he's probably really old and just losing weight each year.

We shot a buck that everyone thought was a cull 3yr several year back. Game camera pics just made him look young.

Brought him in to age and he was actually 8 or 9. Teeth completely gone, and many scars, etc from year of fighting.

Went back through the years of pics and they were able to backwards trace him like 7 years. Was relatively unimpressive his entire time, so apart from noting that he should be probably be shot, nobody ever paid much attention to him and he never showed up during the season.

I personally think he is like that friend of yours that's 6' tall 150 pounds his whole life. We have argued about his age for a long time. He was on the don't shoot list in 2015 because his body shape fools you. I watched him for 20 minutes in 15 and almost let an arrow fly anyways. Saw him in person again last year and let an arrow fly only to watch him run off with no arrow penetration. I don't know his age for sure but if I'm correct he can't be younger than 6.5.

Throat patch is much more pronounced on the last pics you posted. Not the same buck IMO.

It may be the camera picture catching some glare too, but the deer in the last pics has a prominent white band around his nose, where the deer shown first doesn't have that at all.

I think you may be on to something, not sure, but maybe....could still be glare.

Whoever said 2.5 are the guys I need to be hunting with.

Re: Age this deer - 09/13/17 03:13 PM

Those are all the same deer.

Based off of previous pics, and the shed from 2014, I'd say he is at least 6 this year, but I think he is closer to 8. Some deer just don't express all of the typical characteristics that we look for to age them.

He is a lot older than anyone else thinks. In regard to brow tines, the point that they come off the beams won't change, but they will get shorter/longer as they age.

Some deer will peak at 3.5, some will peak at 7.5... like people. Some kids are really good at football in 7th grade because they grew so much faster than everyone else, then they are just average when they are seniors in high school, because everyone caught up to them.
