Mills county hunting? - 02/15/17 08:49 PM

I have the chance to lease a place in Mills county for the 17-18 season. I know absolutely nothing about the hunting here and was hoping someone could share their experiences or give some input on how the hunting is there. I was told there are deer, turkey, some dove, and quail. Any info is appreciated

Where at in Mills? My dad has been hunting SE of Goldthwaite for 20 yrs. A couple new high fences within a couple miles and new fence all the way around his lease several yrs back and they don't see near the numbers we used to when I hunted with him. They don't seem to see the quality of bucks as before either but that may have to do with the oat field not getting planted since the son inherited the property.

Sounds close to our place. Lots and lots of pressure. I am in favor of AR, but in our part of the county, I have seen buck numbers and quality decline since it has started. Our part of the county is what I call "broken cover" habitat. Deer sooner or later will be visible moving from cover to cover. With the surrounding pressure we have, I think 95% of all 13+ inch bucks get shot every year, leaving few to mature and those that do mature, many are junk that no one wants to burn their one 13"+ buck tag on. It is high grading the herd putting so much pressure on one segment of animal. I saw better animals when you could shoot two bucks with no restrictions. I think it spread the harvest out over all the age classes. From my perimeter fence, I can count 11 stands & feeders. The deer don't have a chance. Just my observation in 8 years of owning the property and intensively managing the place.
