Would you shoot an albino?

Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 02:16 PM

I have seen a bunch of controversy about this topic. When people shoot them some people jump all over them. What do yall think, would you shoot an albino if you saw one?

You bet your last dollar I would... That's a once in a life time thing.

Re: Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 02:20 PM

I read an article a while back about this topic. After some thought on the topic, I would not shoot an albino doe. My criteria for shooting an albino buck would be the same for any buck. I would only shoot him if he was a mature (5 years or older) legal buck.

I'd shoot an albino just to see if they have white meat.

Re: Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 02:23 PM

I would. This guy shot a nice albino buck in Missouri and a bunch of people are bashing him. It's like why? he shot a legal deer in a legal way and he is happy with it so why do you care. Beating him up isn't going to change anything.

I think I would. And if people don't like it, they can either get over it, or let it ruin their lives.

Re: Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 02:31 PM

I doubt I would shoot an albino doe unless I hadn't gotten anything all season and it was after Christmas. But if I saw a legal mature buck you better believe he is goin on the wall

Only if it had a descent rack to go with it.

Re: Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 02:37 PM

Most likely but only if it was mature and also had a nice rack on it.

Re: Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 02:55 PM

I read several years ago that albinos occur about 1 in 1.5 million. With an overall heard of approx 5 million in Texas that means there are a few running around every year and we hear stories every year. So, are they really that rare?
I was at a hunting show at Will Rodgers in Ft Worth once and a guy had a full body mount of an albino white tail. Looked pretty cool.

Is it true they are bad for the herd? I have read that their senses are all screwed up.

Yep, I would have it at the taxidermist before the next day and there would be no pics of it.

Yes I would since they are not a normal whitetail that you would want started in your herd.

Deer have been "importing" themselves across our borders from NM, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and LA for generations already.

It would have to be a Mature "TROPHY" to me, and the location and circumstances would come into play as well.

Re: Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 05:25 PM

We have seen one on our lease. I don't think she is an albino because she hasn't always been that way. She has gotten whiter each year, this was last year. She started with just the white on top of her head. Never has a fawn with her. She is at least 6 years old

That might be a haint deer. Or a deer haint. I'd shoot it to find out.

Buck, sure...doe, doubtful.

Guess that's just considered a piebald

Re: Would you shoot an albino? - 11/18/15 05:53 PM

On our place? Not a doe, I think she'd be cool to have around. If it was a great buck that was 4.5 or older (I'd drop a year off my usual wish) I'd shoot him and get a full body mount from a really good taxidermist.

Well that settles it, if I ever have a doe that color I'll name her leucy...and a buck I will name leucifer.

If whitetail deer where meant to be white or piebald in color they would all be. They are brown colored for a reason.

What if they're trying to adopt a color phase geared towards surviving the next ice age?

I would say yes they are very rare. By those figures that is 3.5 to 5 total in a state as big as a lot of countries.
That would be rarer than a needle in a haystack.
That said I would blast a buck or die if I ever saw one.

Then they are destined for extinction with global warming.

I have seen one albino doe in my life. It was a regular at my stand for an entire season. The deer looked unhealthy and had all kind of growths all over it. I never thought of shooting it but it was discussed because it appeared to be very unhealthy.

It's illegal to shot an albino deer in Tennessee (used to hunt there with my nephew). Also illegal to harvest albino deer in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Only if it had a head full of antlers that I would shoot if it were regular color.
