Jack County Thread - 11/02/15 06:08 PM

Didn't see one started for good ole Jack county and know we have more than a few guys that spend time in those woods so I figured we should share info and experiences.

I have not actually gotten to hunt during bow season but am headed out this weekend. Is the rut going yet? I will report back next week.

I saw a buck cruising the timber by the feeder this past weekend probably looking for a doe. Another hunter saw a buck chasing a doe at their stand.

I hunted for the first time this year on Sat evening. I had twin fawns, buck and doe at the feeder for about 45 min, no mama so I don't know if someone shot her or something else. Got busted by a doe that came in behind my stand (I say doe because she started and stopped over a 10 min period). She spooked the doe that was also coming in from that side and was about 10 ft from my stand, that doe spooked me cause I had no idea she was there until she spooked. She didn't run off but stood looking in the direction of the other deer for quite some time then just wandered down the trail and still hung around for about 20 min without presenting a shot. Had a close encounter with an owl that couldn't figure out what I was. Great evening hunt with all the activity.
Regarding bucks, as of the 24th when the camera on the protein feeder died the bucks were still eating together and the places I usually see a number of rubs has been pretty sparsely hit for this late. I have not seen any scrapes yet.

By the looks of the game cam pics some slight chasing started a week or so ago. I would say the chase phase will be ramped up now.

Our place is right on the edge of Jack and Montague. Have some nice deer on cam since August so I'm primed and ready. Will update with what I see in the morning.

Okay well from what I saw the acorns are plentiful. Saw a few deer and didn't see much evidence of rut but it certainly can't be far away. Feeders did seem to be getting hit pretty hard but not many of our guys were out opening weekend so we didn't have enough eyes out there to really tell what is going on. Looking forward to this next weekend being very good.

I saw a few young bucks showing interest in the does, nothing full fledge by any means but they are sure thinking about it. Lots of acorns on the ground made for slow feeder activity but the deer seemed to be moving all day.

Didn't see any real chasing last weekend; but did hear a lot of shooting close. There are a ton of acorns on the ground so the feeders weren't getting hit real hard. I'm taking of work this Monday and Tuesday in hopes of hitting the rut.

Finally weeded through all the game cam pics, as of the morning of 11/8, still had 2-3 bucks at a time at feeders, had 2 fork horns getting after each other pretty hard, in one pic a healthy 8 was looking over his shoulder at them watching. So I would think this week, weekend it should be ramping up. We are off 59 out of town about 10 miles.

My ranch used to be off 59 and West Truce Road. We sold it back in October. I sure do miss the place.

Too much hunting pressure and not very many trophy deer frown

Still wish I could have been in the market for your place, was a great looking place off the beaten path!

RJ. I am off Jamison road, been here for about 25 years. I have cruised up and down Crooked Creek road countess times. Are you on the north side by 2127 or down by Campsey rd?

Stub, we are about half a mile in off 59. Right across the street from those nice wheat fields.

Saw one small buck cruising yesterday. Seen several groups of does with fawns. Thought this weekend would be pretty rutty. Not in the least.

Re: Jack County Thread - 11/15/15 03:36 PM

My weekend in clay county was a non-event. I knew deer weren't hitting the feeders hard, but was still expecting to see some action along the scrape line we saw last weekend. My thought is all the deer are locked up and staying close to home bedding areas, which my lease has none. I may lay low for a bit and then hit it again once it finally cools off, if the deer come back to the feeders.

Hunted Wednesday evening. Still SLOW! Saw one doe. Other guys hunted this evening and saw a little more action but not much in the way of rutting. One doe and buck were together but not chasing or pushing. Just ate a little corn and walked back into the brush. One guy said he actually saw six coyotes chase a good buck away from a feeder.
