22-250 Load??

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I was curious about a load out of a 22-250 that would be good enough for deer. I do a bunch of predator hunting w/this rifle, & I shoot 55gr V-MAX. I love what it does to those critters. Would that bullet be ok on deer? I know placement is everything, and I'm not too concerned w/that - this rifle will flat shoot !! The shot would be under 100 yards. What say you guys? Thanks for any input, and Good Huntin'

65gr SGK as fast as you can push it, somewhere around 32-34 grains of varget.....

I would shoot a bonded, partitioned, or monometal bullet.

Nosler bonded performance, fusion, partition, gmx, or barnes.

I haven't loaded any yet, but I'm going to try out the Sierra 63gr. semi point for my wife this year. Growing up as a kid, my grandfather loaded these for me and it was a deer killing machine.

I like the 63 gr Sierra as well, and it will stabilize nicely in the 1/14" twist barrels that are standard in the .22-250. Wait for the buck to give you a broadside shot, place the Sierra in the boiler room, and start butchering.

22-250 isn't a deer load. Proven fact whitetail can only be killed with 300 win mags and up. 180 gains minimum, only way to knock them off their feet......

Most likely that 63 grainer will stabilize, but not the 65 gr SGK or the 64 gr Nosler BSB. The 60 gr Partition just maybe will stabilize, but probably not in that 1 in 14 twist. I've killed some decent size pigs with the 63 gr Sierra, but don't think I've used it on deer (maybe once or twice).

If you don't want to load your own, I've found that the Winchester 64gr Varmint X Polymer Tip Rapid Expansion shoots very well out of mine, but no idea what kind of hole it'll produce on animals. I've only put it on paper while trying to find some factory rounds that will shoot worth a carp. Federal Premium has a BTSP (I think) in a 60gr and it wouldn't stabilize in my 1:14 twist. It sprayed everywhere.

As you mentioned shot placement is not your concern and most shots will be under 100 yds
and you are proficient with 55gr V-MAX just use it. I guarantee if shot placed in Right Spot even the
biggest deer will drop in its track.

The 63gr Gameking that I shoot in my .223 wouldn't stabilize in my 1/14 22-250. I had problems with the vmax on a couple of head shot hogs (They didn't penetrate the skull and just knocked the pig out). I started shooting the 45gr TSX over a near max load of RL-15. It's extremely accurate and has killed everything from coyotes to deer and hogs like they were struck by lightning. They're expensive but worth it to me.

Here's a 100 yard 3 shot group from load development. It'll do this every time.

I have had great luck with a Hornady 60 gr SP. Very simple and I have been very impressed by the damage done to the vitals with out a lot of damage to the meat on entry and exit.

I agree with scalebuster on the 55 grainers. I was using 55 gr Nosler BT's and had a hog out in front of the blind, moving at an angle away from me. I figured it had to be a head shot, so I went for that with the 220 Swift. The bullet either glanced off his thick skull or fragmented (or both). There was a cloud of dust over his head (brown mist, not pink mist) about the size of a basketball. He did not stumble or stop trotting. Also shot a few medium sized pigs with that same bullet, behind the shoulder. Killed all of them, but way too much tracking was required.

If the OP's rifle will stabilize that stumpy flat based 63 gr Sierra SMP, I'd go with that. If not, I'd buy some of those Barnes bullets. Another option, which I've loaded up but not 'pig tested', is the 55 gr Sierra GK. I'm told it'll work fine, but have no personal knowledge of that yet.

As for using 22 calibers on deer, I have other and better options. Granted that it'll work if placed properly, but that 'placing properly' can be difficult. Just this morning I had about 10 hogs dash out of the woods behind me and head toward the far side of the ROW. No way to get too picky with bullet placement. I had the 260 with 100 gr Nosler BT's and I dropped two pigs that never took another step. I was workin that bolt gun. Shot em through the body. Quartering shot on the biggest one (120 pound-ish) with good exit. Quartering shot on the 80 pounder that also exited. If I'd had the 220 or the 223, I really don't think I'd be having pig for supper tonight. Sometimes you just need a bit more grunt than a 22 cal will give you.

I should mention that back years ago when I did shoot a few deer with the 220, the old 60 gr Nosler SBBT didn't work that well. I got best results from the 63 gr Sierra SMP.

Federal power-shok 55gr SP on this 110lb. boar my wife shot last year. Bullet lodged in the skin on the opposite side, slightly quartered away from us. Knocked him down, got up and ran 10 feet and bit the dust for good.

Federal Fusion is a good deer load if you can find them. I have had good luck with the green box 55 grain Remington soft points as well. The best ammo I ever found was the Federal 55 grain Trophy bonded bear claw, but they discontinued them years ago. Wish they would bring those back. My rifle wont stabilize the partition bullet from Federal.

Hetman, mine wouldn't stabilize those 60gr nosler partitions at all in my 1:14 twist. My dad has basically the same gun as I do, but in a CDL vs. my BDL and his doesn't like them either. Both guns did like the 64gr Winchesters though. I bet with a faster twist the NP would be great.
