First Decent Ones Seen This Year - 09/10/15 03:24 PM
We hunt a small place. A small place not known for a lot of deer nor big deer.
On the south & west side, there's a couple of hunters. On the north & east side there's very large tracts of "no hunting allowed" owned by the same family for decades, tree huggers you could say. The brush and hardwoods are dense with thorny vines blanketing the deck, mustang grape vines creep through the trees overhead. On the place I hunt, my buds 100 acres, it's coastal production except for about thirty acres. He cut out six or seven acres for us to do food plots. This year, we had a good one, no cams on any of it.
We saw almost no deer all summer at the one feeder I ran for pigs but I cut the plot about three weeks ago or so, it was eaten down to next to nothing. The deer started showing up on the one cam at the pig feeder, first does and a few weeks ago our bucks started trickling in. More are showing up all the time now. The hunting neighbors, they haven't captured anything on their cams yet. We're keeping quiet on what we see, nothin but a pig and coons, a doe an yearling now and again. The cam I have deployed
is a 940NM IR so night pics have limited distance and the pics I get texted to me from that cam are only 320X240 low quality images. But I also capture 5MP pics on the card, and could bump that to 12MP. We had about twenty to twenty five deer hanging around last year with buck doe ratio of almost 1 to 1. But many small spindly horned young bucks. But we had a couple of bruisers also. No deer killed last year. This year even the young bucks are sporting eight point racks although they are kinda thin. Last night the texts started coming in around 9:30 PM or so, as they always do, and continued all night. Haven't downloaded the card for the better quality pics yet but in the darkness of this pic, the buck on the right, I could tell it was a better animal. So this pic isn't great but if you look close it's a decent animal. The other pic taken at dawn a week or so ago, is strange as the animal appears to be facing the cam dead on. But the rack doesn't make sense to me. He's got good mass and decent beam length. Just can't make out any G tines on it. Bow season is closing in and my neck is swelling. Maybe we take a deer this year, maybe not.
Cheers
Decent buck on the right here:
Wish I had a better pic of this one:
