is this a good deer rifle. - 01/12/15 11:23 PM

I was wondering if a remington model 700 in 243 is a good rifle for deer at about 100 yards?

.243 is a great caliber for deer hunting. Im not a fan of the 700, too many recalls.

Re: is this a good deer rifle. - 01/12/15 11:45 PM

My first deer hunting rifle that was not borrowed was a Remington 700 in 243. A Great Gun.. I still have it and my son took an antelope at 522 yards with it a few years ago.

I know that the newer Remington rifles have had a lot of quality control problems and recalls.

Look at a Ruger american rifle, a good gun and it is not alot of $$$.

I saw a couple deer get dropped in their tracks with the right shot placement the other week. I have also seen some run for miles but shot placement was an issue.

I have taken over 100 Texas whitetails with a 243. Most were inside of 150 yards. The 700 action is one of the favorites for the custom builders to base their rifles on, even the actions made currently. Though they have had some recalls in the past years, it is still a very good rifle for the caliber and the caliber will put a Texas whitetail in the freezer (or at least ready to be made into freezer meat) if you will do your part.

I agree. It's light on the shoulder and very effective.

243 is a good rifle but if where you hunt is real brushy a 30/30 is the way to go imo.

700 Remington is one of the best in 243....recalls have involved the triggers. The old ones could fire when you moved the safety to fire and then moved the bolt back. The new ones just had a recent recall for trigger repair under warranty.

Is there a production timeframe for the recall? I have an old one...

How is a 30-30 a better gun in brushy areas?

I'll take it off your hands if you don't want it.

700's are great guns. Like Dusty said, the Ruger is a great gun, and not a lot of dinero. If you've got someone selling you the 700 for a decent price, I'd buy it. If you're talking about buying a brand new gun, you might want to check out the Ruger. 2cents

Yes, good caliber. You may want to also check out the new Weatherby Vanguard S2. Good Value for the $

The caliber is a good one, it is what I use for predator hunting and my tuck gun. Killed everything from rabbits to deer with it.

Love the 243 win

Re: is this a good deer rifle. - 01/13/15 03:43 PM

That rifle will do fine...If I was starting from scratch I'd go with a 270 or larger caliber, but the 243 has killed a ton of deer, particularly in Texas.

Re: is this a good deer rifle. - 01/13/15 03:56 PM

Absolutely. I own a remington 700 and have never had a problem. Trigger is decent and the rifle is super accurate straight out of the box. .243 is also a gread deer round!

From a man who never used any rifle but a Browning BBR 30-06 for 40 years of big game hunting I love my REM 700 243 which I have now used exclusively for the last 5 years.

Low recoil, accurate, and deadly with reasonable precision shots on any deer size game. Don't hesitate on the 243!!!!!!

Not sure of the time frame...I have one that is 30 plus years old. Two years ago it fired when I took it off safety to remove shells. Scared the crap out of me, local gunsmith fixed it for $20.

Love the .243 cartridge and I love the Remington 700's I do prefer the BDL, CDL, or detachable magizine models over the ADL

Re: is this a good deer rifle. - 02/03/15 01:37 PM

Great caliber and model. I have a 195x winchester model 70 featherweight .243 and my daughter has made some nice 100+ yard shots with it. I've knocked down the deer I've shot with it, one being about 147 yards. Deer went 10 yards and layed down behind a cactus. I use a 30.06 model 700. Never had a problem with model 700 or .243 caliber.

243 is a great gun but the rem 6mm is better
Posted By: postoak

Re: is this a good deer rifle. - 02/04/15 04:58 AM

The 6mm is slightly more powerful but not necessarily "better" and there are more powerful 6mms than it, too, so why stop there, if we're going down that path? Anyway, the OP apparently has his eye on a particular .243, so let's not confuse him.

Re: is this a good deer rifle. - 02/07/15 04:41 AM

I like my .243. Browning pre-81 BLR. Sweet, smooth and accurate. 6 different hunters have taken deer with it -- none lost! All you need if you put the bullet where its supposed to go.

you can't go wrong with 243

Re: is this a good deer rifle. - 02/07/15 03:06 PM

i thought caliber choice was dependant upon the shooters height?

.243? better be over 6ft....
