Ice = No Deer?

Hunting in Shackleford County and the ice is so thick that you have to skate to blind. I highly doubt the deer like walking on this. On top of that it is extremely noisy to walk on. I saw zero deer last night in a field we usually see a lot in. Sitting it again now, I guess I'll see what happens. What is y'all's experiens with this? Will deer move on thick ice like this?

They have to move eventually.

I saw the same thing near over the past few days near Brady. I sat Wednesday morning and saw one deer where I usually will see 20. Wednesday night I saw 2 off the distance. I think if you can wait them out they are going to get hungry and come out.

I got a little five point at 19 yards right now and the ice on the branches is so thick they are sagging down in front of my shooting window so if a deer came out I could shoot it would be tricky to get an arrow around the icy branches. He was not comfortable with ice around the feeder but picked and poked around until he got his fill I guess.

Deer on our place are cleaning it up under feeders and smashing the alfalfa bale!

I WANTED TO GET ALFALFA OUT SOO BAD. But couldn't get down there... they have to eat to stay warm. So they may not be there the first morning after but they wont be gone very long.

Thought this thread was going to be about the superstition that filling ice chests before a hunt is unlucky.

Luke27, maybe that is why the deer aren't moving. I have ice in my ice chests too. I do know that I'll be sore tomorrow. I busted it walking back to truck this morning. Kept the gun off the ground, somehow.

I ended up seeing two bucks this morning both in bow range. That's pretty good because I can only see 30 yards in one direction in that stand so I'm really limited on visibility. From looking at tracks and corn on the walk back they moved. I got back in at 1:30 and there's squirrels and birds everywhere so I bet the deer are on their feet too.

This afternoon should be better here also. The ice is melting and you can actually walk without falling.

I'm headed out now. No ice here just drizzle. last year when it froze thick for 4-5 days I saw 0 deer, only turkey and a couple hogs.

After the ice melted I had 8 does and 4 bucks at the feeder right before dark. They couldn't wait any longer.

I believe it Dan. They have to eat, but they just don't like to move in ice. At least in Texas.

I just finished a hard 2 day hunt in Erath county. Not near as much ice as those North of us but still icy. We knew they would move at some point but I had to leave by 4:30 today. Ended up not seeing anything and my cousin only saw 3 does right at dark last night. Of coarse, as we were pulling out we saw 15 turkeys and 3 doe. Figures!

We've been hunting last 2 days and it's been rough, deer are hitting the hand thrown corn we have been putting out, feeders were froze solid. But they are coming at night. I would have put my money on mid day movement in this weather but it has been opposite for us. They are pawing the ice to find every bit of corn they can. All the vegetation is frozen solid ground is covered in sheet of ice and snow. Just need some daytime movement tomorrow.

No ice here except on trees and the deer have been hitting the corn feeders great the last couple of weeks. Mature bucks are pulled down and hungry after the heavy rut and are coming early and staying late at the feeders. cheers
