30-06 vs. .270 - 11/24/14 07:47 PM

Just bought a 30-06 today for a 2nd deer gun instead of a black powder, when we shoot the .270 into the ground, it puts a hole the size of a baby's head in the ground. Who can predict what the 30-06 will do? Koodoes to the person that gets it...and anyone have any bullet recommendations? Does that hog hammer stuff work good?

A .223 will shoot a hole in the ground the size of a grown man's head. up

Its most likely blowing a big chunk out of the ground.. will do the same to a deer without the right bullet and not always a good thing... this test your doing also will depend on the type of bullets your using in each

Re: 30-06 vs. .270 - 11/24/14 08:02 PM

umm, the same? And a .223 will only do that with some nosler bullets that my friend hand-loaded...not that I have done it with both kinds (store-bought, and by hand) before.

Given correct bullet selection, there's not a nickle's worth of difference between the 30-06 and 270 performance on game.

Depends on how wet the ground is. worthless

Shooting into firm ground won't tell you much. I think the OP should find a big mud hole and shoot straight down into it. Us forum guys would like to hear how that went.

Careful doing that with a 30-06, the bullet could come out the other side of the planet.

Nav you drink beer when you hunt so you obviously wouldn't know the difference between a 223/270/30-06, so irresponsible and not in control of yourself you should have your guns taken away. roflmao

I don't shoot holes in the ground, so I can't answer that part of your question. Never used hog hammer either...

30-06 is as good as and all around caliber as there is on the North American continent, for any game except the grizzly/brown bears. Basically, you can shoot 110 grain up to 220 grain bullet weights from one rifle.

Personally, I use 150 grain Nosler Partitions exclusively for deer/hogs (or anything else that jumps up in front of me.) Just saying, get some....Hope this information helps.

Need to know barrel length, twist rate, how was the barrel broken in and was it cleaned recently, how much crosswind, bedded or non bedded action, from a rest or off hand? Just some of the basic information that is needed to give a good prediction on what kind of holes a rifle will shoot in the ground.

My wife shoots a 30/06 and has 27 kills with 27 shots, including a 273 yard antelope shot on a hunt in Wyoming. She uses a 180 grain federal bullet. Only 5 of these kills have we had to track and none over 50 yards. All the others dropped in their tracks.

I forgot to say, I shoot a 270 and I am very happy with the results. I too have never lost an animal.

I shoot a Federal premium BTSP in either a 150gr or 165gr in a 30-06. It all depends what the store has (150gr or 165gr) lol. All were DRT except for 3 of them and even those didn't go very far.
