My First Buck - 11/13/14 07:17 PM
I hunted deer back in AZ when I was in high school, but only ever shot does. It was just a rule my stepdad had at the time on our property. Well, due to school, work and location (CA) I hadn't hunted deer for over 20 years. That changed last January when a buddy invited me to come hunting with him on his property. Took a nice doe & filled the freezer, but it ignited the desire to hunt again. This summer, my buddy and I got a lease in Runnels County. Great deal, 800 acres and only the 2 of us are on it. We are paying a bit extra for this season, but will probably bring on a few more hunters next year based on our results this year. It's a bit of a haul from San Antonio, but I enjoy getting completely away, and my cell phone barely works out there, so I don't get nagged by work or the misses. We don't have the huge racks I see on some of the pictures here, but they are decent.
Anyways, I took my son up with me opening weekend and he connected on a nice 7pt for his first deer. That weekend was for him to learn a few things, so I didn't even pull the trigger. This past weekend, I went back with a few buddies. Saturday morning saw a small spike and a doe at out #5 feeder that I thought would be busy. Then with the wind on Saturday night, a complete bust. Went to our #1 feeder on Sunday morning. Saw a young 8pt come in and thought about it, but decided to wait. Then this guy came out and I knew he was on of the bigger ones we had seen on the cameras, so I took the shot. Clean through, dropped in his tracks.
I really don't do this for a trophy, I do it for the meat. That being said, I am pretty proud to have finally taken my first buck.
