Incorrectly scored on first try

Incorrectly scored on first try - 11/04/14 02:11 PM

Killed this buck back in 2009 and went on the Boone and Crockett website to get the score sheet but really had no idea what I was doing when I was measuring the antlers. I ended up with 128 or something like that. Well I measured it again now that I have a little more knowledge and go figure I made 1 big mistake the fist time. I thought the 4th point on the left and right antler was a G4 but its actually just the main beam which most of y'all prob. already know. After scoring again the correct way I got 115 6/8 with 4 7/8 of deductions. IMO this buck is pretty dang big actually biggest I've ever seen while hunting so now I really want to see what a 130,140, and 150 inch 8 point looks like in person. Im guessing a lot of people screw this whole scoring thing up and who knows maybe I screwed it up again LOL.

Here is the buck

You still get the 4th mass measurement between the last point and the tip of the MB. The line marked "H4"up

Also, few people consider the net and post the gross score, so as you have it measured, it would be a 120" eight. Add the last two measurements in and that is the score up

Like Txs said, most people including myself, do not give net score. IMO if they grow it. They credit for it. Only if they are gonna make the book does deductions come into play. I think I understand where you are coming from on that being a big 8 but only scoring 120, let me say it takes a big 8 to score 120. For every 10 inches you gain over 120 on an 8, makes a huge difference in looks. A 140- 8 point is a stinking monster. I will add, people will post up pics of a deer and a score, that I know are not correct,( it may be an honest mistake) but it kinda hurts guys that are trying to learn to score on the hoof.IMO

Like txhunter said you still get the h4 mass measurement and again most people refer to gross score before deductions. I think you are on the right track just forget about deductions and get that forth mass measurement in there and your in the low 120's which looks about right.

When I scored the first one I ever scored I did the exact same thing you did. It was a main frame 8pt with split G2's. I measured the part of the beam past the G3 as the g4 which was wrong and did not give him an H4.

this was the first buck I ever killed and I've only killed 2 in my life so believe me I am extremely grateful to have killed such a beautiful buck.

Still a great buck that looks much bigger than his score. I would have guessed his mainbeams to be longer than they measured.

Gross before deductions, is basically the Safari club style measurements, don't believe "they" believe, in deducting what a buck was able to grow a the final score.

Nice buck Sapper, anyway you want to score it.

Man if this was guess the score I would be way off. Looks like a mid 120's-130 buck to me based on pic. Nice buck

When u add in the mass measurements u missed, that buck with gross 125+, so u were about right the first time when u green scored him.

I may have been wrong when I said the first time I scored him I had him at 130 I prob had him at 140 because the extra 5 or so inches I would have had each side thinking the 4 th points were G4s

Where do I measure between the 3rd and 4th point? I ask bc it states the smallest circumference so wouldn't that be right at the tip of the 4th point.

Pretty sure it's the halfway point between G3 and tip.

For reference, this is a 137 7/8" buck that I got.

Yes, so take away about 4 inches for just the mainframe score.

Re: Incorrectly scored on first try - 11/05/14 01:06 AM

His main beams were very long because of how high his rack came up off his head before it turned.

Re: Incorrectly scored on first try - 11/05/14 01:07 AM

I got 126 5/8 after adding in the 4th mass measurement.

Re: Incorrectly scored on first try - 11/05/14 01:10 AM

Great buck no matter what the score. The one below we had at 136 1/8 and a scorer for the big game awards has it at 132 7/8. I thought I knew what I was doing, but I screwed it up.

18 1/4"

Re: Incorrectly scored on first try - 11/05/14 01:14 AM

This one was "only" 128". In my opinion a 120 class or higher 8 point is a dang good buck!

Yeah I love 8's but I really want a mainframe 10 to complement this guy.
