SW Young County Update - Kinda Quiet

SW Young County Update - Kinda Quiet - 11/02/14 02:09 AM

Things were pretty nippy this morning but really, really quiet. Heard maybe 2-3 shots all morning and nothing close. Lots of greenery out there and corn still lying under all feeders. The few pictures I saw on game cams gave me no strong indicator that the rut has begun near me. The 2 acre foodpatch that I have planted in wheat had lots of tracks in it and a good 5-6" green wheat base. Do you think these deer are doing their handy work at night in that foodpatch? Also had tons of acorns under one of the white oaks out there; thinking this could be working against me as well. Still hoping for some wetter and much colder weather to get things really kicked off rutwise.

These are the best buck pics I have had in the past few couple of weeks. Unless some new guys move in, could be a slow season for me.

I hunt SE YOUNG and it was stupid slow. Didn't see anything. Gunna pull sd card after tomorrow's hunt and check things out. All of my deer are still comming in at night. Guy driving through said he did see a nice suze buck buck on the back side of my lease. So gunna set a cam down there and see what's moving.

Only heard one shot for sure 2nd might have been one of the pump jacks.

Never heard of white oak in that area, I would think live oak or post oak but I've been wrong before. How big are the acorns?

pretty big with hardened casing around them, you may be right about post oak. Either way, lots of acorns, encased under it.

Didn't see anything again this morn.

Just checked cams and only one deer pic. Just the the tail end of it. And 0 pics of deer at the feeder. Only a lone turkey in one pic. Usually been covered up in turkey.

Wonder if the newly placed cows have something to do with it? Been here 3 weeks now.

Did some exploring yesterday and added a cam on a trail that had some big deer tracks. Down by the acorns.

Put a TC on a tree line covered in Oaks and you will probably get all the deer photos you want. I have one set up this way and it gets more action right now than the one on the feeder and food plot.

I saw cows, dove and Sandhills, nary a pig or deer. 70 degrees and 25mph winds no bueno. Supposed to blow on the am hunt. Hopefully it's laying for 30-45 min at daybreak

We hunt NW Throckmorton County and it was very quiet...literally. Heard three rifle shots all weekend whereas a normal weekend this early I'll hear 3-4 reports every hour. We also only saw two deer come into our feeder although another hunter on the same place saw an 8 pt. chasing a single doe all, over the place.

Pretty slow on our place in Stephens County, too. Only saw 2 deer on five sits. The other guys on the lease experienced a similar lack of deer activity. Other than saturday morning it was overly windy, which surely didn't help the hunting. Corn piling up under the feeders. All game cam photos are at night, but do show a few decent bucks. Hoping things pick up soon.

I a little north of Loving off Hwy 16 - I did see 3 legal bucks (all still young) a 10 pointer that is maybe 3.5 years old 14-15", an 8 and a spike. First time I think I've ever hunted the place and not seen does. My pictures dropped off from like 600 the previous 2 week periods (each) to only a little over 100 the past 2 weeks. I've got a bumper crop of acorns and the corn is stacking up under the feeders. They will hit the corn more after the acorns go bad.

I hunt near Murray, pretty slow. Saw 3 small bucks and a few does. Did have some pics of a couple of mature bucks taken last week with coal black tarsal glands. Did see a small 8 pt. Sun. Morning chasing a doe. My acorns are about eaten up. The rain today should make them unedible. Good luck in the next couple weeks, should be getting really good.

I picked up this lease about two weeks ago. I went out and set up the feeders and cameras and haven't been back till yesterday. Just like everyone else the corn is stacking up under the feeder, but signs of activity all over the property. I sat in the blind and didn't see or hear anything except for the falling acorns.I checked the cameras and had only a few small does and this one buck. I won't be able to get out there again till hopefully Monday because this week end I'll be at the other lease in Childress. Its been slow there too. Oh well its beats going to work any day. grin
