We own 113 acres in Utica Ms, about 4 miles from the Natchez trace and 15 minutes South of Vicksburg Ms. This will be our first year hunting it and the first year its been hunted in years. It's bever had feeders or food plots on it. I currently am feeding soybeans and corn. I get tons of pictures, but I've had a camera out for 2 months and haven't gotten any real nice bucks on camera yet. I have a lot of 13-14" 8 points and tons of small 6 points and smaller. I also am getting pics of a giant body cull buck. Anyway, is this to small of a piece of land to feed protein? I don't know the neighbors management plan or if they are even hunting it.

If you have soybeans and corn I would not waste the money on protein. I would try to work with my neighboring landowners about letting the bucks get some age on them.

Agreed.

Don't get discouraged this early in the year.

Thanks that's what I was thinking too. I know it's early and I'm getting new deer each time I run my cameras. I just don't know how to contact the neighboring land owners about managing.

I am guessing they don't live there? Just watch for them and I wouldn't be too pushy about it. Some folks just don't care and that's their right. But never hurts to talk. Typically, it isn't hard to get the public tax info or the county courthouse will have their info too.

Its all woods on both sides and the back of our property. If I see them I will most definitly mention it to them.

I have been gone for a long while but hunted that area for 25 years. Lots of hunters still run deer with dogs in that area although the use of dogs has diminished from its heyday. Can make it tough to get any type management program going and I can assure you ALL the land is being hunted around you and if as you say you have not been there yours has to more than likely.
Unless they have changed the laws recently you can run feeders but you cannot hunt within a certain distance( 100 yards)and you must not be able to actually see the feeder from your stand to prevent actual hunting over feeders.

The dog season is only around a week long and there is very strict regulation on it now days. It's a dying type of hunting because of the laws and regulations. My place has been bow hunted I know that, but we pushed out the spots for food plots so I know this will be the first year with food plots and steady feeding. I accidentally ventured on some of the neighboring property looking for my property line. I walked a long ways on it and found one ground blind in the hardwoods, but it had a tree through it, so I'm not sure when the last time it was hunted. I know people are hunting the woods beside us, but who knows how hard or anything like that.

Yes feeders have to be 100 yards away and out of sight from your hunting spot.

I would try and make a 20 to 30 acre refuge area you don't go in or disturb. I would put my feeders and possibly food plots along the edges. Given food and undisturbed cover you can get a buck to use a pretty small area especially if you get a doe band also using the area.

I have pics of 5 does in one picture several times and lots of different deer. That's exactly what I've done on both sides of my food plots are big bottoms which are just thickets. I'm not going to disturb that area because I know that's where most of my deer are coming from.
