Would you cull this buck? 6 pt

Would you cull this buck? 6 pt - 08/19/14 12:38 AM

Would you cull this buck from your lease or would you let him walk? He is a 6 point that looks to be heavy horned and wide. He may even be trying to throw a 7th point.

I would like to know your reasoning for either culling him or letting him walk.

He looks young. I'd pass unless I knew for sure he was 4.5 or older. However, if you have many in his age class that are better, and you need to take numbers, then he could be culled.

I wouldn't. He is young.

Taking him doesn't hurt or help anything. Do you have enough tags to cull all the deer you want to take off?

We are a 1 Buck lease, so if I were to take him it would count as my buck. We have discussed looking at "culling certain bucks". I was wondering if anyone would consider him cull worthy.

If he looked like this last year then yes. If you don't know then I might would pass on him.

Let him walk. He looks to me like he has potential.

Idk but that's clearly a Sasquatch he's looking at in the second pic.

Looks 2.5 to me. I'd let him walk and see what he does next year. Beams come off high and have decent length, he could do something in the future.

Depends on where you are at and what you are doing. This deer dies early on my place as do all 8 points or less, but some do not have that luxury (MLD).

I couldn't shoot that buck... looks like a 2yr old and could possibly be a great 8pnt in a year or two

Would depend how late in the season it is and how much meat I'd taken up to that point.

Re: Would you cull this buck? 6 pt - 08/19/14 02:41 PM

Take this into consideration. We had 3 big 6's on camera last year, one had big forks and brow tines two had 3 pts on the beams and no brow tines. We were planning on shooting all 3 of them given the opportunity. I believe 2 of them were 3.5 and the other was 2.5 years old. We only shot one of them.

So far this year we have no big 6's and no deer spotted thus far with missing brow tines.

Nope, to young he might make something for himself.

No. I'd wait to see how he develops during the next year or two.

Re: Would you cull this buck? 6 pt - 08/21/14 02:57 AM

As much as I like to cull grin you have to know what the deer on your lease or land will do with age and nutrition or lack of it. His life was saved by the AR's.
Here is a buck from last year and even though it rained 26"+ it was very dry from mid Feb till late May. I know he was finally eating out of a protein feeder in January of this year. It did not rain much from Dec of 2012 till first week of May (little over 3") but he was eating protein daily.
Notice the notch in the top and lower portion of his left ear. I was looking through pics today from the last couple of years and saw the notch.

I have quite a few pics of this buck and he comes to water at the house and never noticed the notch. He was not the buck I would have expected to be the 6 point from last year. These pics are from early August of this year.

Can't think that a person didn't notch that ear. Someone's pet?

Not that I know of. I seem to have a lot of bucks and does that have them for some reason. Lot of Lime Prickly Ash grows in the area and it has wicked hooked thorns. Could be cutting ears as they run thru it. Bucks I can understand getting it during the rut but some show up from the fall season pics without a cut or notch only to have one when I start taking pics now.

A different buck from last year.
Here is the buck on 12-19-2013

Same buck on 12-31-2013. He also had a smaller notch in the bottom of his right ear.

If he's low fence you'd best shoot him before the neighbor does! popcorn
