16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 02:58 PM

Any estimate on score? Its the only pic on this computer, but I have counted 16 points in other pics.

Low 150s or so depening on spread and G1 length.

that's a lot of tines!

Plenty enough to be a shooter...

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 03:49 PM

Ill go with mid 150's

Awesome looking deer, but I am thinking some of his points wont be scorable and I only see 15.

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 03:56 PM

Man that's a young one there let him go if you for one more year and I would say right now he's about 3.5 but not the best pic
Nice and would be hard to pass up that's for sure.

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 04:04 PM

Trying to be very conservative on the measurements I can't really gauge based on that pic, I came up with 161.

I'd say well above 150.........my estimate is 160 minimum.......I'm with you Grosvenor.

Mid to high 150's. Hard to see width.

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 05:21 PM

155 and he does look young that is your future STUD
Posted By: Pitchfork Predator

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 05:41 PM

Low to mid 150's because of average tine length. Agree looking at the neck, face and brisket he looks from that angle like a 3.5 year old and should be given a pass as hard as that would be. If he makes it one more year and has good browse he should jump big time.

I think yal are not considering all the mass (around 50 )with the webbing on this deer. He will be 170 -175 type deer without a doubt. Is this deer on your place? What county? Awesome buck!

150ish

Pass? Haha. Man that's a stud! Only way I'd pass him to get older is if it was HF . But I'm thinking this is a LF deer , isn't it? If so your neighbor will have it at the taxidermist if you pass him.

I have him at mid to upper 50's.

No where near 50" of mass and not close to 40" of mass.

lol. Glad someone estimated higher than 150 on this thread. Geez.. Its a LF deer in Edwards County. I was impressed since we dont supplement protein any. We already have trouble with poaching as it is..so I will probably take him.

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 06:12 PM

Even with 3in measurements for bases and between each tine. It would be almost 40....he has more than that Ranchman. I always agree with you but not this time brother. Lol

He only gets 4 mass measurements per side for the score.

Here is a 7x7 typical with one small kicker I killed in Bandera County that grossed 177.

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 06:27 PM

It is pretty awesome to see a 7X7 frame, no matter what he ages or scores. I've never seen one on the hoof. Neat deer. He's got the double G2 on his left side, which was the source of much debate on the famous/infamous King Buck.

I'd worry about score after I put him in the dirt.

See.
Range.
Breathe and try to calm myself.
Draw.
Anchor.
Settle.
Correct pin.
Squeeze.
Collect him.

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 06:41 PM

He is a great buck and potential sire. It is a shame to take him so young but, in your position, I would also take him. Others will not pass on him for the gene potential.
Posted By: chk

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 06:42 PM

Young- I agree
Can you let him walk on a low fence? Most likely not unless you are talking about several thousand acres. That buck would be great for breeding but would get shot 100% if he crosses that fence.
Gotta shoot em or someone else will unfortunately!

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 06:42 PM

I estimated 180. Wish I had a better pic. Definitely 16 points. He has an abnormal point next to his G1 that you cant see in the pic. Nothing huge, but its there.

Are you saying you take a mass measurement between EACH tine? You only get 4 measurements per side regardless of number of tines.

I've got him at 25 inches of mass tops. I'll be nice and say 27" beams, which I don't think he has. 17" spread, can't tell for sure=96" frame. Now points can't see brows, we'll call the 3" each=6. G2's-10 extra point on left-5. G3's 12. G4's 16. G5's-9. Give you 3" for the 6's but doubtful. Being nice as I can and that's the most I can give him.
All I see is 15 points.

That's 157

I'm thinking once on tape he will be closer to 150".

I gave him 34" of mass. His beams are flat or palmated and not round and thick. His mass appears to be more than it will actually be IMO. Just like this buck appears to be really massive but yet only had 35" of mass.
Posted By: 8pointdrop

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 07:09 PM

I might be shorting him on mass that's what I struggle on when guessing, but I over estimated him on beam and tine length I think and still can't get him in the 160's.

Your first guess was 50, no way he's near that. We will meet in the middle at 30".

Then I have him at 162".

I still think I gave him way more length than he really has. Be surprised if he breaks 155.

Yea my first guess was measuring between all the tines.lol. I forgot it was just 4 measurements. For these rare bucks like a 14/16 point whatever they should measure mass all the way up....all the tines are measured of course. Wonder why B/C made it a 4 mass limit?
I've never killed anything over 11 points so never had to worry.lol. Shot several P/Y but never turned anything in.

To the op, whatever it scores it's a stud! You must shoot him and let us know score! Haha. Beautiful country in background as well....must be in hill country?
Posted By: Grosvenor

Re: 16 point buck Score estimate? - 10/10/13 10:54 PM

It's not a 4 measurements limit. Every buck, even a spike, gets four mass measurements on each side.

Wow,I have a 9 point that I had scored at 142...years later...today..lol..I find out I get the other mass measurement between g3 and tip of main beam...now it's 145! I've been hunting ( not using bc score sheets often obviously) for over 30 years since I was 11 yrs old and have never heard of this.
I was always told 8 points only get 3 because you have to have another tine to measure between..thanks for great info grosvenor!

lol. I didnt have it officially scored, but the taxidermist did a quick measurement that came out to 165 or so... The width of spread I think is what hurt him if I recall correctly. He looks better than his score in my opinion.
