What is this in my deers ham???

Killed this deer on Friday evening, a hot day. But took it to camp, quartered it, and hung the meet in a walk in cooler. From alive to hanging in the cooler couldn't have been more than an hour.

Anyways, went home Sunday. Out the meet in an igloo cooler with ice. Today took the meet out to cut into steaks and what not, and this fell out of the ham. Found a little burrow in the ham and just threw that section out.

It's about an inch long and was still alive. The meet could have cooler in the ice chest, but it wasn't warm at all.

My first thought was a Botfly larvae or something, but I didn't think we had those here, and I really think this thing found its way in there after the deer was dead, not alive.

I'm probably sounding dumber as I type, but what the heII is it?

Me too....I don't think they should eat part of the ham though.....seems fishy. or, buggy, lol

Bet it came from nostrils lots of deer have them in their nasal cavities

looks like a bot. Strange that it's in the ham but anything is possible... Not a big problem here so far, but we brought a horse over from Missouri a few years ago. About January they started coming out of her neck... Pretty nasty. The vet that taught the disease portion of our hunting license class said that the meat would be fine, but I ain't that hungry......

The meat IS edible, and so is the bot for that matter.......if you're hungry enough. Bots are one of those parasites that sometimes get lost looking for their target tissue.

Every year come hunting season I always thought the pain in my butt was due to my wife eating on my azz about going.
Now I'm leaning more towards the bot fly.

My first encounter with botfly larva was watching them crawl out of the nose of a deer I had just killed. Yes, it's nasty.

Same as animals... They ingest the eggs somehow, they hatch, and the larvae starts it's journey to the outside world in as straight of line as possible from wherever it is....

Bot fly....meat is fine...although I would definitely trim WAAAAAY around it....its just gross.
We see them in our deer a lot in NW Coleman county....usually in the nose.

That's a throat bot. We see em in junction. Often in the deers throat. If you've ever heard a deer cough it was likely bc of a bot

Every deer I killed in Texas had them in their nasal cavity.

Me being the picker that I am, I can't even begin to fathom having something grow to I that size inside me! I'd be cutting that sucker out with a razor blade! Wow

What size was it? Nose bot grubs are usually pretty small. I've seen them in deer and domestic sheep and goats. Cattle grubs get up to an inch or 2 long. Cuterebra spp bot fly larva are usually about half the size of cattle grubs, but I've seen some larger. Anyway the deer is probably an aberrant (not the usual) host of the bot fly grub you found. With aberrant hosts you often find the grub in a unusual places. Cut the meat out around the tract, the rest of the ham should be fine.

I've seen cuterebra in rabbits I've shot. I've also removed them from domestic rabbits and cats.

I can almost bet my life savings it didn't come out of the ham. Nearly every deer I've ever euro mounted has them in the nasal cavity. It did't come from the ham, take it to the bank.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Odd things, these bots. As parasites go, they're not the brightest crayons in the box. There are many different species of bots, and the one we see in whitetail deer prefer to live in the pharynx.

But like all bots, they have a tendency to get lost on their migration and occasionally end up in Miami, when they meant to go to Chicago. And occasionally, a bot from one animal--say, a cow--just might end up truly lost and find itself in a goat.

On many occasions, I've fished Cuterebra larvae, which prefer rabbits and some rodents, out of cats.

X2 on the cattle grub. They end up right under the skin and bore a hole through the hide to breath while they mature. You can pop them like a pimple and the grub come shooting out. Don't see them much anymore, but I have worked with them in cattle. Deer can be alternate hosts.

People can get them as well...
