Captive Deer Breeding - 03/12/13 10:07 PM

Another thread got me thinking about this. Do captive WT does come into heat at the same time of year as wild WT does at the same latitutde?

Pen fed does vs. pasture fed does is going to have something to do with it. I am also sure that you are giving the captive does drugs to bring them into heat and not waiting for a natural heat to occur like it does on regular pasture bred deer.

The region in the state and where the doe was from has more to do with it than anything. Deer in pens hold the breeding dates for the area their bloodline orginated from. Same as in deer moved around the state by TTT or brought into the state by TPWD years ago. What changes for their is the deer they cross with to dilute the bloodline. You take a deer from South Texas and TTT it to the areas where the Avery Island subspecies is and the South Texas deer will rut mid to late Dec while the Avery Island deer will rut late Sept-Oct. Deer taken from Texas to Miss. or Georgia will still rut at the same time as long as they remain pure Texas bloodlines.

I saw a show where they transplanted south Texas deer to Florida, and they keeped there Texas rut. apparently Florida has a rut for four or five months because they brough deer in from all over, and they kept their native rut. apparently Florida over hunted.

if this was the case, most of the deer in texas would rut in december, because most of them came from south texas after over hunting had decimated the populations.

I just finished reading an article I posted in another thread, that shows deer stocking rates in east texas. east texas deer rut right around the 1st of november, if they "held" their ruts in relation to where they were from originally, they would rut in december. There would be no diluting of blood to change the dates,so to speak, because they were stocking the deer in places that had no population whatsoever.

It would be the case if there were no other deer in the herd left to breed with the transplanted deer. You get variations in rut even in South Texas. OP asked about captive deer breeding. If you take deer that are from a pure South Texas breeder herd of deer and move them into pens in areas south of Houston where there are Avery Island deer those pen deer will always rut when ever there rut is. It will not change.
I was at a meeting of the Southeast Deer Study Group in the mid 90's and they talked about variations in ruts across the south to the southeast to north Florida and south Florida. Areas in Georgia had gotten deer from South Texas and their ruts were much later than the rest of the areas of the state. When I was in northern Kendall County the rut started there in mid October every year. I found a new fawn on April the 5th one year and he was old enough to run from me. All native deer to that area. I witnessed 2 mature bucks chasing a doe in late Sept during an early cold front one day. Rifleman will tell his rut in his area of East Texas is mid October also. If there are any native deer in an area when you move in deer from another area it will not take very long for the deer to revert back to native genetics if enough transplanted deer were not brought in to saturate the area.
Are you 100% sure where the deer came from that were stocked into East Texas?
