Live from South Texas
Heck everyone else is doing it, I'll give it a shot. Solo in camp this weekend and will be on stand most of the day so it will keep me occupied. Will post throughout the day.
Right now on a big 4-way, can see 200-300 yards each way. 23 deer at daylight up and down corned senderos. 3 dinks, 4 8s, one 9 and one 10. Hogs at the feeder dammit.
Nine is 5.5+ yr old, main frame is 135-140" with another 10-15" of trash on his bases. Wonderful deer.
40 degrees And completely still. Gorgeous morning. Sipping coffee hoping another bruiser will show.

Re: Live from South Texas - 11/12/11 01:24 PM
The big blind
with central air and heat. No I have some work to do this morning in town and then back to the ranch. But will be hunting with a young fellar this afternoon though.
Good luck to you. Hope it stays cool for us.
Lots of deer moving in and out. Lost count at 30. Yote grazing on corn down one sendero????

I draw the line on coyotes in the sendero. More than one or eating corn they get a welcome to the managment program.
the benefit of me shooting that one coyote does not justify ending a hunt in conditions this good.
Just had two spikes really get into it 200 yards to my north. Have never seen young deer fight that ferrociously.

Good luck sounds fun!
Should have put more thought into choice of meals at PF Changs last night. Back on stand now.

What goes in must come out.
somethings more than others. You just thought shooting that yote would mess up your hunt.
Made it back after thanksgiving for a quick couple of hunts. Not sure what happened to the other half of this thread but I'll pick it up here.
No way to move the tripod back to the 4way where I saw a big mgmt 7 a couple weeks back so I'm in a double box blind about 700 yard away, on the other side of a big draw. We will see what happens.

Good luck.
Just a small 9 so far. Have been out of the stand 5 times to scare turkeys away so far.

Re: Live from South Texas - 11/26/11 10:52 PM
Just bust one! Good luck.
Finally chased em off for good. Scared everything in the county I guess. Not a thing since.
Nothing but a small buck since the last turkey scare. Very rare slow evening for here. Once a year slow.
Supposed to be 30 degrees cooler in the AM. I'll pick it up then.

Re: Live from South Texas - 11/27/11 01:24 AM
The cold front already hit here. The wind is blowing. Hopefully I will get out tomorrow afternoon. Good luck in the morning.
Headed to bed and it is blowing like hell. Gonna be a frosty ride
in the Polaris in the AM. Should be a good morning.
45 and windy. Got to the stand a little late this AM. Not my weekend I guess.
Already 8-10 deer milling around. One very nice 8.

Re: Live from South Texas - 11/27/11 12:48 PM
Good luck. Maybe the deer slept a little late too. I killed my biggest buck ever after getting to the stand 30 min late.

Re: Live from South Texas - 11/27/11 01:10 PM
Good luck!!!
Pretty decent morning. About a dozen deer total, one 145ish 9pt I had previously seen and a 130ish 8 pt. No sign of the mgmt 7 I am looking for.

It'll show up eventually!!!

Re: Live from South Texas - 11/27/11 03:03 PM
Good luck.
Let's hope. He may not be intact anymore but we will see. Lots of deer moving this morning, jumped a big buck in a creek bed on my way in this morning chasing a group of does. She wasn't singled out yet but that's the first sign of rut activity I've seen this year.
Headed down i37 back home. Will be back Friday and will pick it up then.
Well. Before I could even get this going again I shot the mgmt deer I was after. Got to the ranch at noon, loaded gear and headed out. Set the tripod back up on same 4-way I hunted a couple weeks ago, corned, parked the truck and got in. No sooner had I sat down and he came to corn about 700 yards to my NE (1/2 mile from where I saw him last time).
I hopped out, worked downwind and picked through the brush to where I thought he should be. Crawled out and there he was at 90 yards. Setup on my stomach and as soon as he cleared a small piece of brush the 270 weatherby mag dropped him.
Back in the tripod drinking beer now. Gonna finish what I started!

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/02/11 09:30 PM
here's a pic of the kicker; let's get a little scoring contest going. Cracker, who obviously has the upper hand here, is guessing right at 130. I added it up from the pic and came up with 136.
Damn bro in law your quick. Thanks for posting pics.
I'll kiss your [censored] (figuratively) if he scores 136 as a 7. Could be that would be badass. I guess technically he is an 8.
It's all relative buckrage. That's just my attempt to help improve the herd here.

129-131 is my guess. Love the live hunt!

Good job. Congrats. That's an interesting trophy.
129 3/4 official score. Very happy with that as a mgmt buck.

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/03/11 02:15 AM
Deer that get up early are tough anyway. That's what I tell myself when I have enjoyed myself too much in camp the night before!
My lord the wind is blowing this morning. Ditched the tripod for comforts if a double box. Gonna get some shuteye and get up n see what's on the 4-way.
Started raining at 6 and hasn't let up yet. Saw a few deed, most noticeably a 20" 8 with a big kicker off his base. Slow now.

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/03/11 02:39 PM
hopefully things will get good when the rain slows/stops

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/03/11 03:07 PM
Is there a certain caliber of deer that you are waiting on?
Good luck
When is the weather supposed to break there?

160"+ for a trophy. No that optimistic this year but gonna hunt hard anyway.
Rained constant from 6-830 this morning then stopped. Ground is so dry the surface isn't even moist anymore.
Back on stand about a half hour ago after chores and filling 15 feeders. Today I'm in one of our "bottom" type stands. Most of our box blinds are situated on brush flats where you can see a long way but this one is a ground blind in a low spot with heavy woods and live oaks around me. Feeder is 30 yards and max visibility is about 100.
I have about eleventy trillion cam pics from this feeder with the same suspects each time, including a 3.5 yr old 135" 10 pt, but this spot is usually good for a surprise buck or two as the year goes on.
Two spoke a doe and a 130ish nine pt milling around
Here are some better pics of the Mgmt deer - mainframe 7 with kicker out the back of G2.
Back at it. Pretty warm and overcast now but supposed to get colder rest of weekend and stay cloudy and misty.

pretty slow. My guess it will stay that way and all he'll break loose tomorrow. I am ok with that.

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/09/11 11:44 PM
waiting on your trophy pic
Lots of movement today but nothing notable.
In a tripod this afternoon. 48 and constant light rain since 630am with strong north wind. I would rather be in a box blind In this cold rain but don't have much confidence in seeing something new there.
I moved my tripod setup to a very rarely hunted pasture. It's open grazing pasture with sparse mesquite mixed in. Feeder at 200 yards and I can see about 1/4 to 1/2 mile in each direction. There have been some good bucks in this pasture in past years but no one has hunted it this year.
Could turn out to be a real dud or a brilliant move. We will see.

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/10/11 10:12 PM
Good luck. I was out this morning in Western Atascosa county and saw a lot of activity. I called it a short day due to the weather.
Nothing here yet. My hunters are reporting good action at feeders. This spit is always a late hunt.
Bug buck is hung up behind some brush 200 yards out.
Buddy just unloaded an AR on pigs a mile away and I need new britches

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/10/11 11:14 PM
Looks like this was a good call. A couple of quality bucks but with the brush dark conditions and fogged optics I can't tell much. Not shooters but the next one might be.
3 giant sows eating corn in field but hauled azz.

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/21/11 08:57 PM
It ought to be a good afternoon for hunting. A little cooler would be ideal. Good luck.
In the tripod in a creek bottom. Can see 300 yards to north, 100 to south and a little hay meadow around me, 10 acres or so. Hopefully catch some moving.
Gonna rattle some in a min

Re: Live from South Texas - 12/21/11 11:01 PM
Good luck.
Rattled in a small buck and had a die and a yearling stop to eat corn but all 3 busted me so I guess my tripod location was bad. Walked to the nearest stand and we will see what happens here.
Lol, "Grannys" stand is 6x12, two leather chairs, electricity, toilet and sink. I'm roughing it.
