Relocating deer

Relocating deer - 10/19/11 08:39 PM

Have any of ya'll ever trapped and relocated deer? My landowner is talking about trying to do it with deer from one of these neighborhoods that are overrun with them. I told him there are a ton of hoops to jump through with TPWD... Management plans to be approved, vet check-ups etc. Was wondering how you even trap them without hurting them? Anyway its 99% unlikely to happen but I wanted to get him the info anyway. Lemme know your thoughts.

Advise you and him to contact TPWD Permit Branch in Austin to get all the information required.

Only way is TTT and there is alot of work involved if you get permission in the first place. All has to go through TPWD and is more red tape than cost. Both sites will have to kill a few deer and have them tested. Then you will have to hire someone to trap or dart the animals which is the majority of the cost. Next there is a fee per animal (used to be @ $400/each animal)to be paid directly to the state. The program is there more to help reduce over populated areas not improve your genetics. Most of the overpopulated areas have inferior genetics due to the inbreeding which is occuring. If your land owner is wanting to improve his genetics I would recommend that he buy bred does from a breeder facility. With the economy and the softening breeder market this option would definately be the "best bang for the bucks". If the area that is over populated is governed by a community or an homeowners association, you will be spinning your wheels (too many animal lovers to agree to the deal)even though it would be better for the deer. Just my .02
Good Luck :-)
