Can't find a stud!!!

Can't find a stud!!! - 10/14/11 02:04 AM

Trying to hang up my mount and cannot find a stud on the wall I had cleared off to put him on! Shouldn't there be one somewhat in line with the electrical outlet? I'm going nuts! I've nailed 4 holes! I'm tapping around and think it can hear/feel one, but can't get it!!! I know, I need a studfinder, but my wife isn't here right now... bolt

But seriously... It's frustrating.

Buy a stud finder. Lol. There is a stud on one side or the other of that plug the box is nailed to a stud, use screws they work better smile

take the cover plate off the outlet and you should be able to see which side of the electrical bos the stud is on.

anchor will work fine but make sure you get a good hold. stud is usually on the left side of the outlet. then 16" to the next one.....just get a dang stud finder (not your wife they are unreliable bolt).

Bingo. Then get a peice of string and create a plumb line and run it down the side of the electrical plate....

And I would use a screw.

Take a clear glass, drinking glass hold it to the wall, then put your ear to the glass, with the other hand tap lightly on the drywall until you hear the noise change from a boom- boom sound to just a dull thump. But before you start, be sure to set up a video camera, we'll drive 'em wild over at youtube.

Re: Can't find a stud!!! - 10/14/11 02:26 AM

All I know is I don't want this mount coming off the wall. I'm like a kid at Christmas who can't play with any of his toys!!! My Dad's fell off the wall last month after being anchored for 15 years. Busted it up pretty bad. My wife would kill me if this thing comes off the wall after I just paid the taxidermy bill. She already wasn't happy about that, even though I keep telling her $300 is cheap!!!!

I wired houses for a year. Take the face plate off the outlet. You can then take a knife and insert it on either side of the nail on box to find the stud. If they used a standard nail on box, you won't be able to tell which side of the box the stud is on by looking at it

Re: Can't find a stud!!! - 10/14/11 02:46 AM

Nice Buck congrats on the good looking mount. Do what you want but I am a firm believer in hanging my mounts directly to a stud. Stud finder works best and they are pretty cheap at the Depot.

anchors work just fine.

Re: Can't find a stud!!! - 10/14/11 04:59 AM

bmd, u know they make dry wall anchors to hold REALLY HEAVY STUFF.... ya, the lil baby ones will pull out ona shoulder mount, but they make big boy anchors too.

Re: Can't find a stud!!! - 10/14/11 07:16 AM

I second third and fourth the stud...why chance it to a pice that just screws into your drywall? you can also get studfinders at wally world for like 8 bucks. spend the money and do it right the first time and save yourself the heartache of a possible messed up mount and a hole in your wall!!

Not that the anchors are not strong enough it is the drywall thickness I would worry about. Find a stud and be done with it for good.

When I first saw this post I thought it sounded like an ad in the back of "Dallas observer magazine".Go with the stud and don't jeopardize your trophy taking a nose dive into the floor. 2cents
