Acorns

How's everyones acorn crop looking? Went to my lease in Hunt County and usually can't walk anywhere without stepping on one and I didn't see any this year.

What little we do have, are about half the size they normally are, and I'm talking about pin oak, which are small to begin with.

We have hardly any and the few ones on the trees or on the ground are the size of peas. Never seen acorns that small or few. Should be good for the deer hunting as the deer have to come to the feeders to eat.

The oaks trees in my neck of suburban hell are responding well to all the watering me and my neighbors have been doing. Think I'll be doing a little acorn collecting in the next month or so when they start dropping

I'm in Shamrock and we have the most acorns that I've ever seen out there. I don't know how they made it but they did.
THey are big and dropping now. They will all be on the ground in 2 weeks or sooner. The deer, hogs and turkey's are hammering them. This should help them put some meat on their bones.

I took my son squirrel hunting at White Oak Creek WMA and we saw absolutely no acorns or hickory nuts. Talked to WMA manager on the phone and he said that the drought has really done a number on the acorn production this year!

He also said huge red oak trees were dying. White oaks are already dormate from the stress.

In East Texas corn will probably actually work pretty good this year. It may be almost like South and West Texas hunting - feeder goes off you better get ready to take a shot cause they will be coming in.

I am not sure I like that kind of hunting - I still like to set up my tree stand on travel routes and transition areas to nail the deer on their way to feeding areas (acorns), but I have to admit that a corn feeder or maybe even just a pile of corn poured out on the ground may be the way to go this year.

Very, very few at my lease this weekend.

Acorns are hit or miss. My parents place in Nacogdoches Co. has lots of oaks in the bottom. They have trees that are side by side in some cases, with mature acorns on the tress and the neighboring tree completely barren. Some trees have acorns that are about 1/3 their normal size. I don't know if any of the acorns that I have seen will have any meat inside.

The white oaks don't have any acorns on them and I have only seen one hickory tree with nuts. Even the pig nut trees are barren. It is going to be a terrible year for mast crops.

We actually have more this year than last. Does not make any sense as dry as it has been. They are just now starting to fall. At least it will give the deer a little to eat for a few weeks.
