no improvement, and assuming it's not a drought, then take him. He's at least 2.5, next year he will be at least 3.5 (obviously smile )

if he's not doing anything by 3.5, smoke him.

Yes take him(next year); man talk about making a kid grin if he gets to put that one on the ground, thats what I try to do with managment bucks.

Bad thing about that is I only have 1 tag to use (I know, I know, I have the spike tag as well...but true 2.5yr old spikes are hard to come by).

This buck picked a perfect time to show himself, I still couldn't pull the trigger on him.(There's a stand about 250 yds to the right.)

i think he is 3.5, so at 4.5 next year, take him or find someone to come out and take him. No tine length and only 8 pts, smoke him.

3.5. yes pop him next year if tine length does not improve. most likely will always be a "cull"

Thats a niece, nephew deer. if he was 3.5 last year even at 5.5 I doubht he will grow over 20 percent of what he is now.

plus you've already got a pretty top knoch deer herd

that is what it will probably end up being. I have a bad problem of not being able to tell the kiddos NO if the RIGHT deer walks out.

He does have a little more mass than the rest of the deer in his age class, he is just sucking it up on MB and tine length.

I would have culled him this year.

Not old enough. Wait another year or 2.

Look at Hind Quaters and Belly. At least 3.5 maybe more.

I say let a kid shoot him......

Re: Age? What would you do? - 04/22/10 08:28 PM

looks a lot like my first buck. Decent width but short tines. I'd say he should get another year.

Re: Age? What would you do? - 04/26/10 07:46 PM

That deer is 2.5 . On our place he walks for at least 2 more years but he would be a great deer for a young 'un next year if you want he gone.

Re: Age? What would you do? - 04/26/10 11:35 PM

3.5 to 4.5 let the young ones take him.

Re: Age? What would you do? - 04/26/10 11:50 PM

why would anyone wait until a deer is 5.5 to CULL?

the entire idea of a CULL buck is to remove them from the herd, not wait and see how big you can get your CULL bucks to be...

X2 if hes the same next year. I'd take him! rifle deer2

Re: Age? What would you do? - 04/27/10 05:45 PM

he's either two and a half or three and a half, my honest guess would be two. it depends some on where this is too. he's obviously a heavier deer with decent antler characteristics. but if he's a south texas deer or a northern deer then that's natural. he's going to look big already in comparision to a hill country deer.

as far as shooting him. it depends on the property you are on. if you are on a very large ranch with extensive an trophy management program then he could potentially merit culling next year. on some properties he's already a trophy. on most places though i would say he deserves to grow another year or two. i would give him two more years.

nah, he's still dumb. He doesn't hang out around the feeders during the daytime (except for at daylight opening morning), but he frequents the front end of a hayfield.

Re: Age? What would you do? - 04/29/10 05:15 AM

Next year opening mornin' be at that feeder have a kid at that feeder! If he's a no show then I'd be at the hayfield! Well atleast you have him patterned! Call me if a kid smack's him I wanna video it!

Re: Age? What would you do? - 04/29/10 04:52 PM

might sound bad, but the kiddos go other places to hunt early in season and we get around to taking them when they are out for Christmas break.

300 acres... doens't really matter to cull him. see what he turns into. Maybe he will surprise you.
