I don't know of anyone who has Spanish Ibex. But that doesn't mean there isn't. Good luck.

All the subspecies? I wonder how they'd do in Texas?

Re: Spanish Ibex - 02/27/13 03:52 PM

They'd probably do just fine. The weather in the southern half of spain is very similar to Texas from my experience. Gredos habitat is a bit cooler, higher, and wetter than you'll find in Tx, but there's a lot of spain that you could easily mistake for the Tx hill country.

A lot harder to get stock out of zoos these days, somewhat frowned upon unless there are a number of steps in the middle.

What other species do you foresee for your project?

From the research I have done, they are mostly a wild goat. From the pictures I have seen I may have a whole bunch of them. I saw a video made in portugese that featured a wild herd in a national park. My pyxies would fit right in.

All Ibex are of the Capra Genus. (goat)
In Spain there are 4 subscpecies of the Spanish Ibex that are recognized.
1. Tortosa Beceite
2. Gredos
3. Southeastern
4. Ronda

I just hunted Spain and took a very nice Beceite and will go back in a year or two for the Gredos.
They are all very similar cloration with the differences being horn configuration and size.
It would be kind of cool to see some here....but I would rather go after them in their mountains.

Re: Spanish Ibex - 03/07/13 09:54 PM

Great Ibex,

I used to live in Andalusia between Cadiz and Jerez, we had Ronda ibex in the area I was in.

Hunting them at the time wasn't something I could afford. The going rate in 2000 for a small nosed American was about 10,000 Euros.

I wasn't able to break into the Spanish hunting scene, mostly because Spain's middle class is very small and most hunters hunt rabbits. Mostly with greyhounds and falcons.

I did have one stag/pig hunt near Seville that ended in me missing a wildboar and not seeing a mature stag to shoot.
