Smoke From UTV Exhaust - 01/28/20 08:03 PM

I have a 2015 Mule 610 XC and did a hard days work at the deer lease this weekend.

had to pull a trailer around, in and out of puddles nothing to deep

in the last hour or 2 we were driving to the back part of the lease to put up a game camera , driving down the county road going as fast as that little Mule will let me and i start to smell something burning look back and white smoke is coming out.

Slow down and it stops so i figured maybe some water got somewhere or i had put in some Sea Foam on not this trip but the one before it maybe it was burning something out and go on my way.

Drive the rest of the way back to the spot to put the camera out, going as fast again, nothing happens until coming back, going down the county road again at almost the same spot, smell it again look back huge cloud. slowed down again it stops, put it in neutral try and see if we can make it happen again but it doesnt and pretty much go back to camp load and head home with no issues i can see.

wasn't sure if i should ride it some more to see if this happens again, if this is something i need to bring in to be checked out right way, if there was some stuff i can do to see if whats happening or if yall are like yup know just what it is and here is the good news.

Thanks,

Check your oil level. Be sure it isn't over full, And the smoke was coming out of the exhaust pipe correct?
Could also be a valve seal leaking. Happened with our mule, not noticable at lower speeds but really smoked at high speed , New valve seals fixed it.
And In the are it happens is there a difference in terrain? I.e. Up or down a hill?

Thanks TCM3, and yes it is coming out the exhaust and i will double check the oil.

I did check it but i really was seeing if it was to low not high so looking back i think i need to check again.

When it happened it was on the flat smooth county road, and its was when i was maintaining my top speed. Normally around the property its on and off the gas due to pot holes, mud holes, bumps and what have you

If it is to much oil should i have noticed this sooner, i got my oil changed almost a year ago now.

if it is a seal, is this something i need to fix asap? is it possible to do it myself?

white smoke is coolant
blue smoke is oil
black smoke is fuel

Believe this unit is air cooled.

If the unit is aircooled, check the air intake on side of engine.
Sometimes when driving thru the dead weeds and grass this time of year, the motor will suck pieces of it into the air cooling intake on engine and block air flow, making engine overheat.
I have seen one older Mule that totally seized after the cooling air intake was blocked with coastal bermuda and had to be re-engined.
The mule was the "babysitter" for a neighbor that bales hay and his son who drove it around and around in the field while he was baling it.
Kid literally drove it to death then smoked battery connection trying to get it to turn over.

Checked the air intake and side of the engine where the fan is.

Everything looks good.

I did more googling and found on the service manual online it says White smoke: Piston oil ring worn. Cylinder worn. Valve oil seal damaged. Valve guide worn. Engine oil level to high.

That seems to match TCM3

So question is to get that fixed anyone got an idea on price?

Also is it something i need to get fixed ASAP?

Well scratch that

I went and double checked my oil level and now forgive me i am new to this and have been trying to teach myself but unless i am doing something wrong it is high.

I dipped it in several times and whiped it each time and it showed above the H, a good bit above the H

drain oil and refill to proper level, maybe half way between the "add" and "full" marking ... and run it for a while to see if it quits. It might take a few miles to burn the overage of oil out of the system. Just a thought

Oil didn't feel thinned out or smell like gasoline did it?
It seems like 610s have a leaky needle problem

Checked for the smell and its possible, for thinned also possible.

Its been a year since i have changed the oil so im not 100% on what used oil would smell or feel like.

I would guess it would loss some of its viscosity.

Also, the exhaust drain plug, how do i get that off?

I checked the air filter for any oil and figured i would run it for a few minutes just to make sure i put everything together correctly and i noticed water coming out the muffle.

i have been trying my hardest to get this thing off but cant any tips on that?

TCM3 i see you are in Cut and Shoot, where do you get your stuff serviced at?

Water coming out of exhaust is normal on a cold gasoline engine. It’s condensation, clears up as engine warms up.

What’s an exhaust drain plug?

On the muffle there is a plug that looks like it screws in, take it off and you can clean out the spark arrestor

I do it all my self, but I get parts from Pro Powersports of conroe. They're where I would take it if I had to, they're folks have their act together.

Sure you turning the plug the right way? Lol.
I've taken mine out before, try spraying it down WD or PB blaster.
