Tire Pressure on ATV

I recently bought a Yamaha atv, the tire psi is 3.6. This seems too low to me . If you have a like atv, how much air do you keep in the tires? Thanks! The 3.6 is on the tire.

depends on size of tire and bike. But if stock tires, around 6-7 lbs is good. 10 max

Usually says on the sidewall. My Kawasaki 300 was 3-5 so 3.6 doesn’t seem out of line, necessarily.

I think Honda recommends 3.6 +- .4. It’s plenty for those tires. Make sure both tires on each axle have the same pressure or it will develop a serious pull.

If it has the stock tires that came from factory, inflate to the pressure on the sidewall of the tire.
If it has aftermarket tires, look up the specs in owners manual, then look at pressure on sidewall and go from there.
Those pressures are usually for standard load and if you overload it, you may have to add pressure.

It also depends on the tire type as some of the chevron pattern tires require a certain pressure to keep from wearing out the center too fast.

One last thing: if you are in mesquite country and run slime or other sealant in your tires, you might over inflate a pound or two.
That way, if you run over something, the extra air pressure will help seal the hole and you will hopefully still be at safe pressure.

The owners manual usually has a section on tires & pressures, giving a minimum psi, recommended psi and a maximum tire seating psi.
Some go into a little detail of when to deflate & inflate due to conditions, added weight or towing. The tire sidewall should have inflation pressure info also.
Never a bad idea to add 1 - 2 psi when using a tire sealant.

Some of the low pressure tires gauges that come with them new are okay, some are just so so, plenty are crap.
Take 2 pressure measurements from each tire and use the second reading. More important when recommended tire pressure is in the 3 - 6 psi range.

If you don't already have one, I'd suggest getting a decent low pressure tire gauge unless the one that came with yours seems accurate & consistent.

Tool Shop atv/low psi digital tire gauge 0 - 5.8 psi.
Milton pencil type low pressure #s917 2 - 20 psi
Slime low pressure dial gauge 1- 20 psi

I went to 7 lbs on my smaller 250 cc 4 wheeler and it was too much. I also had a near flat tire last time, and still drove it. It had to be 1 to 2 lbs, if that. So 3 to 4 lbs is about right.

Go with that. Don't over inflate, you'll bounce around like you're riding on basketballs. You really want your side wall to flex slightly on a turn for a good bite. Go to a tire shop for sealant, if you need it. It's cheap, they put the proper amount in and, I don't think it's sold retail.

1/2 gal of slime twice a year does it in the thorn country. I air mine up till they stand up - this avoids punctures in the sidewalls to an extent. Not scientific but it works for us...... you know where your leaks are when it gets cold ..... they start oozing green snot

You guys are way too technical. I use my right foot to test air pressure. I push on the tread from the front or back of the tire, and want the tire to be firm, but not rock hard.

Best solution so far. I run them on all of our mules and never have had to walk back.

I bought a tire pressure guage that goes from 0-15 psi so that I could get the tire pressure correct on my ATV tires...bought it two years ago, and have yet to use it. I just use my foot. LOL.

My Mule has less than 10 lbs. in oversized tires and it rides like the den sofa.
