Looking at a Crew style UTV - Need advice: negotiations, trade ins, etc

So I have a double bench Yamaha electric golf cart to cruise around with the kids, and I have an EZ GO gas utility golf cart (single bench with dump bed). I was thinking if I got a crew styles UTV I could consolidate and not take up so much space in my garage.

1. Any recommendations on Polaris versus Kawasaki, etc?
2. Do dealerships take trade ins like this?
3. Can you talk dealerships down like a car dealer?

We have a Mule, a Ranger, and a new Kubota RTV diesel.

The mule is a workhorse. Few frills, but just flat gets the job done. Probably 10 years old. Low maintenance costs. Only real money in repairs was self inflicted besides a new fuel pump earlier this year.

The Ranger is a more comfortable and much faster. We use it for riding around, not for hauling firewood, etc. more than tough enough for the average hunter. Ranger has the best usable storage for flashlight, gloves, box of bullets, etc. A few years old now. Only oil changes so far on maintenance costs

The RTV is still fairly new for us, but it seems to be the best of the bunch. Nice ride and built like a tank. Wish for a cubby or something to at least put a cell phone in.

All 3 are crew cab models. The Mule and RTV can convert the back seat into a longer bed. Very versatile on weekends you are filling feeders or hauling some firewood. The RTV has a very slick dumping mechanism for the bed. All 3 beds dump, but the RTV is the cats meow.

Can't speak to trade in question as we didn't trade. Mule was bought used when it was just a couple of years old. The others were bought new and price negotiated.

If warranty means anything, Polaris is 6 months and Kawasaki is 3 years.

2door vs 4 door mule pro is the same length.. other brands are really long

I had intentions to buy a Ranger but test drove a Mule Pro-FXT while I was at the dealership and was sold. Add in the warranty difference and it was a no brainer.

There are a couple of really good low price no haggle dealers in the state and a lot of other dealerships will match. Can also negotiate the extras like roof, lift, etc.

Don't think you're going to have much luck trading in golf carts to most UTV dealers.

^^Yup. Look at wheel base on all of them. Mule Pro is a way shorter wheel base. I really enjoy the ability to go from single cab, and long bed, to double cab and shorter bed. I've had the diesel Mule since last November using it at least 3 to 4 days a week. I have nothing but good things to report.

Bad thing about the mule is you are stuck with it once you buy it. Mine is a 2006 and it just wont die. I take it places it should not go, I load it way way heavy, My grand son runs it into oak trees while looking at deer knocking fender off. It's now back on with duck tape. I want a new one so bad I can taste it, but......... this one will not stop running.

I've got a 2016 Ranger Crew Midsize 570. I throw 10 bags of feed in the bed and another 10 bags in the rear floor/seat and it does really well. Plenty of low end power and the only downfall so far is the poor turning.

Yes, you can negotiate price. I got a Mule Pro for $1500 of MSRP. I know other people have made better deals.

Is there a good rule of thumb on ATV discounts?

With cars/pickups I feel like 20% off the sticker is usually a good deal (at least I am good with it) - with rebates, or whatever incentives that month.

I purchased a 2014 Mule 610 XC new because it would fit in the bed of a pickup. It has a couple of hundred hours on it now and put to pretty heavy use. Has never missed a beat.

A few months ago I thought about upgrading to a 4 passenger (the 610) only has one bench seat - so I checked on trading up. Forget about it. The trade value was MUCH lower than I expected. I see similar 610s selling for maybe $3,000 more than what I was offered by dealer. At the same time, the price of a replacement UTVs continues to go up.

At this point I plan to keep the UTV as long as it lasts - and from what I see, that will be a long time.

Kubota RTV900 here, just keeps on going and the hydraulic bed is the cats meow as it helped me load a 192 lb deer last weekend that I was wondering how I was going to load by myself Sunday night. I would love to move up to one of the dual row seat RTVs but they are a bit pricey for what little I need one for.

Can Am Defender HD10

I did a ton of research online. I then decided how far I was willing to travel to get a good deal. I called the places and got their best price ( I told them how far I was coming from). Then after getting some of the best prices I started calling local. I went with a 2016 (new) model that I knew they needed gone. I mostly used "ATV trader.com" once I decided what I wanted, then I'd look up the dealer from there. Good luck.

I've researched and drove the Can Am hd10 max (crew model) and the Mule pro fxt to death. Both are really nice machines and the only two contenders I've been looking at for myself.

Mule Pro fxt (6 seater) is really a great machine BUT the biggest downfall I have with it, is the size of the bed in the 6 seater position.

Can Am defender is a huge machine with a ton of power and rides really nice. Big cab, big bed, lots of cool features and plenty of storage. Biggest downfall I've found on the defender is the price on XT package and Lonestar package. Lower packages can be had for about the same price of a mule pro, but a lot of the storage boxes, winch, roof, etc isn't included. Another con to the defender is the ground clearance due to length. Seems like right off the bat a small lift and bigger tires are needed to not high center.

I'll be going the Can Am route just due to my needs of 6 seater and bigger bed at the same time.

If you buy a Kubota you don't need to worry about warranty. They never break or wear out.

Polaris Ranger has a 1 year warranty.

My 2017 Ranger crew XP 1000 was the best money I have ever spent. 16900 msrp plus ttl, got it for 14k out the door. Replaced 3 trucks with it and so far has done everything and then some that the trucks did. I cant drive it home and it doesn't have ac or heat of course, but the ride and maneuverability, as well as the fun factor negate all of that. I have three car seats across the back for my 5/3/1 year olds, they love it, the wife loves it, win all the way around. The only downside to a crew os the ground clearnace. I added 28" tires, forward control arms and a 3" lift so I didnt drag all over. if you can swing it get power steering, I added it after the fact and it was worth ever penny.

Between myself and family, we have a bunch on our place. I own the 590IS4 gator, otIhers are two Kubota RTV 900 Diesel, kawasaki mule, and two rangers. All of them have their place and perform better in different areas. Overall may be biased, but I'd take my gator or the ranger over all of ours. My gator does everything I've asked it to do and more. Great ride, and plenty of power. I will also agree on the power steering, it's AWESOME!! The Kubota's are great for hauling stuff and will pull just about anything. Ride isn't great and even though our tractor is a Kubota, they hydraulic drive is annoying. But they are a work horse. The Mule is ok and gets most of the job done, but it's underpowered and doesn't ride as good. Overall not bad. The rangers are like the rest of them out there, some good, some bad. So far, the ones we use are good with the occasional breakdown, but nothing too major with the exception of the axle shafts. Now, my neighbor has one of the new mules w/power steering and it's pretty nice. One of the ranches we guide at got the new Can-Am and that thing is NICE!! Don't have much experience with it though, but from what I've seen, it pretty damn nice.

My choice would be Gator, Ranger or Can-Am with Mule following and Kubuota last (unless you pull trailers and haul heavy loads, then I beats them all)



We've got two of them that I will disagree with you on that.... several times...... Axles, front drive shafts, overheat, fuel pump, and few others. It's a workhorse though.
