MTs or AT in red clay

At our property it is mostly red clay . So of course when it rains it's a slick mess. I have MTs currently and have not every got stuck. It will be time to get new tires soon and wanting ATs this go around but worried they will not get the same bite that the MTs get.

Can anyone comment on their experiance with ATs in wet red clay?

Several years ago on a dove hunt near Haskell, with AT tires on my truck, I stopped in the middle of a red clay road to wait out a nasty thunder storm. It was raining so hard I couldn't see two car lengths in front of me. Suddenly a burst of wind hit the side of my truck and it started sliding towards the bar ditch like it was on a sheet of ice. When the passenger side tires hit the bar ditch the truck started rocking so violently I don't know what kept it from rolling over on it's side.
Can't say if MT tires would have made a difference but doubt it.

I can say for a fact that AT tires are awful in wet red clay. They fill up and stay that way. That is the sole reason I switched to MT after running many sets of BFG ATs. I now have the BFG MTs and it’s a world of difference. Currently have 10k Miles on them and they showing no wear at this time. My truck generally eats tires at 25-30k. Then again I drive it hard and pull a trailer often.

Goodyear DuraTrac are AT's that do well in all sorts of conditions including clay, mud, sand, rocks, snow, ice etc...

No I experienced my first twister in 1957 when I was 10 years old and we were living in Oak Cliff. We watched it coming right at us when it paused in a field behind our house then went around our neighborhood. If it hadn't changed path I probably wouldn't be here telling you about it.

You can get away with a/t but I’d go as aggressive as possible. I’ve had good luck with the bfg ko2 on a Jeep and a ram 1500. Ram was 2wd and still managed to get through it when 4wd were having issues(stock tires or street tires). While they worked I’d rather of had mud tires as they did get gummed up pretty bad if I didn’t keep my wheel speed up.

All I run is the BFG KO2’s. They have performed very well for their intended purpose. They are an ALL TERRAIN tire, not a MUD tire. They are a jack of all & master of none. You can’t get mad at an AT tire for not performing as well as a MUD tire.

That being said, my BFG KO2’s have fine exceptionally well in the red clay that we have at the lease. Wheel speed is your friend in order to keep the tread cleaned out.

My last set on this 8,000 pound Dodge made it 56,000 miles. They would’ve passed 60,000 had I not picked up a chunk of metal and decided to replace all of them instead of just 1.

X2. I got 70k out of my last set of these and they do great in all conditions, clean out well with a little throttle/wheel spin. I found a steal on some barely used Nitto Ridge Grapplers, their new aggressive all terrain. Haven't had them in mud yet but they look like they will clean out fairly easy.

my next set will be Goodyear Duratrac since they now make a load range E in the size I have on my truck (285/70r17). My last truck ('02 Dodge Cummins 4x4) had these on it when I traded it in, had over 50k miles on those tires and still had 9-10/32 tread.

Wouldn’t recommend an all terrain at all in wet clay-BFG mud terrains only.

found out earlier today since I posted earlier, I had 2 tires (Toyo RT) with tread separations both on the same side of my truck, so I opted to put 4 new on the ground ... Going with the Goodyear Duratrac as I have had very good performance out of previous sets on other trucks, even in the black gumbo mud we have around central Texas.
