Bed cover opinions - 02/28/18 11:15 PM

I just bought my wife a new Chevy 1500 and the agreement was that I’ll put a retractable bed cover. Well I went to the local 4x4 shop and they only offer 2 and they were around the $1500-2000 price range. I thought I’d ask on here if there’s any down sides to the retractable ones vs the flip up ones. I had the g2 backflip on my last ford and I liked it but she thinks it’s too heavy for her to fold up. So which brand is better and where in the dfw area is the best place to buy?

Only downside is they take up more bed room. I've tried them all. They are alright...I had a Retrax and now I have a Roll N Lock. I will say someone tried to steal my tailgate two weeks ago...the cover locking to the bracket on the top of the tailgate stopped them...because I had the cover locked.

I typically look for used covers but the few I've bought new I've bought from svcustoms.com Make them an offer and see what they do.

I like the flip kind but see where a wonam wouldn't like them.

Two things I don't like about the retractable ones. One is the bed space they take up and two is that if you like to drive with the beer window open, they rattle.

She won’t really use the entire bed that much if at all. She’s wants it to be able to keep our boys stroller and haul luggage and groceries. Only time she will use the bed to haul bigger stuff is on the rare occasion she bought something too big to fit under it. I’m leaning towards the flip up just cause she won’t hardly ever have to flip it up when she’s doing her normal rat killing

My BIL put a retrax on his new f-150. Other than the loss of bed space, it's pretty nice. From my understanding retrax has a couple of different models, but his is the aluminum one that will hold 500 lbs on top. I've been considering selling my campershell and picking up an aluminum retrax myself.

I’ll go check them out. Only thing I didn’t like bout the light aluminum ones is they dent very easily. One hail storm totaled mine but insurance paid for it but that was one thing I didn’t like bout it so that heavier aluminum retrax may be worth a look. Thanks for all the input

Do you require a hard cover? If not, check out the Extang Trifecta folder.

I love my back flip and if your tailgate has the auto open on the key fob or button on the tailgate even better. She should be able to put stroller, groceries etc in without actually flipping up the last section (but as you know, you have to hold it up a little bit to close the tailgate then let cover down)

Not on a couple of the new models...you can close tailgate with bed cover closed.

I bought an UltraFlex this time and it works that way. BakFlip MX4 does as well I think....if not that one, one of theirs does.

Installed the Undercover Flex a few days ago on a 2017 F150, very similar to Bakflip Mx4, actually made by the same company. So far so good, great quality at the price point..$840ish delivered, 5 year warranty, 1 hour installation by yourself.

I've got a Peragon aluminum folding bed cover on my 2012 Power Wagon and really like it. I bought it right after I bought the truck new,it took me about an hour to install it by myself, and it's easy to take off the truck by yourself when I need to haul big stuff around.

I have an Armor Lid solid bed cover on my 07 Colorado, and it's been a great cover. It keeps everything inside the bed nice and dry,but it also limits what you can haul with it.You can take it off pretty easy, but it's bulky and really takes two people to take it off & put it back on.

ARE Fiberglass, painted to match body color. You can keep groceries dry and when someone asks you to hauls a refrigerator, you can say, it wont fit.

They look so much better than the flat retrax of fold up.
