Dodge Eco diesel

Any thoughts on these? I am interested in the mpg benefit. I don't haul much but will every now and than.

The payload is ridiculously inadequate for a truck, the tow rating is decent for a half ton, and guys are regularly reporting high 20s for mileage.

Not a bad truck at all, if you don't need a heavy hauler.

Im considering one.

It does what a 1/2 ton is supposed to do and get the same mpg's of a v-6 car from 5-10 years ago.

Guy at work has one and likes it. For the daily commute, his is about 125 a day, he said it's great and getting about 23mpg. For hauling it still good, wife and 2 kids with camping gear gets about 17mpg. He doesn't tow much, but when he does it's a small flatbed with an ATV, and he gets about 13mpg. He said the worst thing about it is highway driving, it's not very responsive at 70 mph and will have to hunt for gears, that's when empty. My guess is due to the low horsepower output

I have one for a light duty ranch truck/going to town truck. It's 4 wheel drive with leveling kit with rear airbags. The truck gets about 23 mpg I pull a 16 foot bumper pull stock trailer with three horses frequently and it still gets about 19 mpg running 65-70 mph. It will pull a good load for what it is.The only complaint I have is the DEF system sucks as it does on all new trucks. They have more horsepower and torque than the gen. one and two Cummins.

A coworker got one as a loaner while her one ton Dodge diesel was in for service. She said when you turn the traction control off and punch the throttle you better hang on cause it will light up both rear tires. She said if she would have test drove one of them then she would have bought it instead of the one ton diesel.

What sucks about the DEF? I have to add about 2.5 gallons every 4-5000 miles, which isn't really that bad considering my previous diesel used diesel to clean the DPF filter which in result killed the fuel mileage.

I have already had to have my DEF pump and def heater replaced with 5k on the truck. My one ton has had the def pump replaced twice and been in the shop 7-8 times for either the def gauge going out or some other def related problem. Everyone I've talked to from Ford to Chevy to Dodge even Kenworth says the def system gives them trouble .

Strange. I've yet to have a problem with mine, only 10,000 miles though. I've heard of a few people having issues with the float sticking causing the gauge to read incorrectly, but usually fixed itself. Like I said before, it's leaps and bounds better than dumping raw fuel in the exhaust to clean the filter

I am going to be interested if Chevy puts a small diesel in the Silverado. The engine is made in Italy and is a joint owned by gm and crystler. The engine was originally slated for the European crt.

I am liking it more and more. Some first year issues were identified but for me it may be what I need. I like having a truck. Most of my loads are Home Depot runs, and camping type stuff. I don't tow a whole lot. If I could get 23-25 mixed I would be doing about 5-10 better than right now.

Cleric, I THINK chevy is about to put a small diesel in their Colorado. Don't quote me on that, but I've heard it might happen.

They are. It's a tiny engine though 4cylinder

I looked at it but for the price premium they want I can get a 1500.

Seems like I read somewhere that the projected mileage for the diesel Colorado is only marginally better than the eco diesel. Compared to what you give up going from the full size half ton to the Colorado in room and capability not sure how it will be received unless it really does get a lot better mpg.

The Totan with the Cummins is projected to be in the $50-60K range. No thanks, not for an ugly half ton with only 12,000lb Max towing

The midsize GM twins are getting a diesel, however it'll be a 4k premium on the already pricey midsize. To get halfway decent features plus the diesel, you'll be looking at close to 40k. With the discounts you can get on a 1500, you're paying the same if not less for more truck/features. And, unless you do a lot of driving, the projected 10mpg better will take years of ownership to break even due to the premium for the diesel.

That said, the numbers out so far on the GM twins are better than the ecodiesel. Reports are mixed driving in the high 20's to low 30's. Payload and towing are beating the ecodiesel iirc.

That said, it's a GM and a first gen for the diesel (when it comes out, thanks to VW I suspect not until early next year) -- the current model that has the gas engine has already seen a few recalls... so buyer be warned.

Back to the EcoDiesel...

There's a premium on them as well. I think 4k iirc. So any Ram you get, add 4k to the price. Plus most incentives are for gas only, so you loose out on those as well. However, 2015's are being discounted if you look online, the 2016's when they hit wont be -- so limited time frame to pick one up.

My mentality of it all is this...

Gas gets 17-20
Diesel gets 25-28

5-10mpg for at least a 4k premium is a lot upfront. If you are the typical buyer (like myself) who trades in every few years, it's very very possible you wont see a financial benefit in the long run for the diesel (short term, of course because you're paying less at the pump).

If payload and towing aren't as big of a deal to you, I'd suggest looking at the Ram V6. That Pentastar is a solid engine that gets anywhere from 17-22mpg. The only downside is the new 9speed transmissions stink. Don't ask me how I feel about my Cherokee (pilot vehicle for the new trans before they rolled them out) I bought last year...

The 2.7ecoboost in the new F150's has been well received this past year from what I've been seeing online, definitely worth taking a look at. I've bought Chrysler vehicles the past few times and have been closely looking at Fords lately.
