Nice. I've only ever seen one in the wild in East Texas in my 25 years of hunting out there.

I do not believe I would have shot that. Maybe take a picture.

YMMV.

I’ve called a pair in down in Leakey Texas like 9-10 years ago . Only shot opportunity I had I forgot to take off safety . Figured I’d never see one again . North east Texas was the last place I thought I’d run into one

Very nice! I have seen and killed a ton of Greys but the Reds have always eluded me. I have seen one Red in Coke County and one in Lampassas but never got a shot at either one. I dont even shoot Greys anymore because I see so many, but a Red gets mounted if I get one. Texas Reds are pretty rare, but even more rare where you found that one.

Maybe you should become a member of the Texas Picture Forum…..

Beautiful fox to the OP.

Are you going to mount it?

I’ve only seen one, while riding my 4 wheeler on our lease in East Texas either in 99’ or 2000

Re: I shot a unicorn 🦊 - 04/09/22 09:10 PM

They're out there. I wouldn't say rare by any means. Yeah, way more greys than reds.
They're just elusive and sly. I went for a long time without ever seeing a lion in east
Texas, and everyone would say they don't exist, or that I'd seen a bobcat and didn't
know what I was talking about. They'll stay away from coyotes

rolleyes

Didn’t say the OP shouldn’t have shot it nor did I, just stated he wouldn’t have….I kill plenty of stuff….but personally let foxes and cats walk….

Don’t kill snakes either but don’t belittle those that do (typically grin)

My wife’s grandparents old place in the iron ore hills of linden had lions. Big prints that I had never seen before! Supposedly tpwd released some out there. I didn’t ever feel safe walking to or from the stand in the dark after I found those prints around the property.

Never saw a fox, bobcat, or rabbit on the property. Few deer and pigs. Lots of hairy crap though. Somehow only shot coyotes and ducks there.

If the taxidermist can fix him up yes . Kinda blew his ear smooth off with a 202 yard head shot …. It was hanging by some skin . Im sure they will be able to fix him up 🤞

Reds may not be rare for Texas but I’d say they are pretty rare for this area . Fox was taken around Bells Texas …. I’ve been calling around there for a little bit and never even seen a gray . Guy I know has hunted around that area and only seen 2 fox period since he started hunting as a kid … definitely didn’t think I’d ever see one here … they all look the same color in the thermal too 🤣

reds are pretty common where i live in huntsville . have probley killed 15 or so in the past 10 years stealing my chickens . mounted a few and now just tan the hides . past couple years i give them a pass unless they start digging under the chicken yard fence .

We killed one in Mills county around 1992 with a cyanide gun. We haven't seen one since on our place, and I don't know that any of my neighbors have either.

I have seen more reds in Walker County than anywhere else.

Re: I shot a unicorn 🦊 - 04/12/22 02:32 AM

Have only seen a single red in Brown County in 20 years; they were plentiful in Nacogdoches Co when we were out there. It was easy pickings around the chicken houses.

Re: I shot a unicorn 🦊 - 05/17/22 07:17 PM

Saw a red fox a few years back on the dam at Lake Tawakoni while I was fishing.

We have a female that lives somewhere in the wooded area behind our office in Irving, she usually shows herself each spring with a litter of pups but we have yet to see her this spring.

Seeing one is a bit of a rarity though.
