1887 cool looking shotgun

I was done buying old shotguns for my black powder project…then I came across this!

I picked this up yesterday. Less than 65k were made between 1887-1899. Only 6,927 were mfg in 1887 and 13,422 were mfg in 1888. This gun is #8,XXX making it a very early 2nd year of production gun and 134 years old. Needs a good cleaning then plan to shoot it.

You need to make a wall mount for the shotgun and shells. Very cool!

Beautiful and it isn't even cleaned up yet! I would love to have something like this.

Will it shoot modern shells? Just wondering, it's a cool old gun, wish it could tell you it's history.

I found it (and a couple of my other guns) on TexasGunTrader. There is a Model 1901 Winchester 10g on there for sale. That was the gun that replaced the 1887. It’s been reblued and rebarreled for I think $1600

People do but it’s not recommended. I’m hand loading black powder shells for it

I’m planning on turkey hunting with it this spring then “hopefully” be able to do a hanging dead turkey mount with it.

Kinda like this but different if you know what I mean. Tree or post with turkey, gun, and a couple of brass shells…

I’m ignorant. Please explain the reloading process. What is the white stuff in the tray. Thanks!

Re: Colt45….I was done buying old shotguns until this! - 01/17/22 11:59 PM

I take fired shells cut them down to 2.5”, deprime and reprime them. Now I have shells ready to load. These are light loads so add 7/8 oz (by volume, not weight) of powder. Put in an over-powder card and tamp down. Add fiber wad(s) then 7/8 oz shot and over-shot card. Roll crimp the shells and seal with glue. The glue dries clear and seals the shells.

The ones at the top were done first and dryer. The ones towards the bottom are still a little “milky”…

EDIT: these are loaded with reclaimed shot mixed with #’s 6, 7.5, 8, & 9 so I marked them “M 6-9”

I like that old Winchester. I always turkey hunt with a 22 but if that were mine it would be my designated turkey gun.

I really like what you have going on here with the black powder!

Cool old gun. I think if we go back to the other thread about this I suggested that model but didn't see a good one on the auctions at that time.

That idea for the turkey is a good one for the old war horse.

Just picked up more 12g brass! Working on getting it all milled from the extinct #57 primers to # 209 shotgun primers!

Ordering wads for 12g brass (11g wads) later today!

All the pieces and parts are coming together!

Got a case to protect them all. All 250 fit perfectly. Scheduled to be milled out from #57 primer to 209 shotgun primers. The brass alone weighs almost 20#’s. Ordering wads today. Hope to get them loaded up soon. They will primarily be used in the Winchester Model 1887. As a repeater the brass will function better than modern plastic shells. I’ll use the plastic SxS’s….

Thats a neat old shotgun and it's none of my business but I think I'd sandbag it and fire it from a safe distance the first few times. I just don't trust the metallurgy in old guns.
