Erath county success - 11/08/21 11:23 PM
I haven't posted much in a while but thought this was as good a time as any. I got up this morning with a slight headache and thought about sleeping in. Instead I forced myself up, made coffee and headed for the blind behind the house. Takes me about 2 minutes to get there. As soon as it got light I saw a deer chasing 3 other deer. It was a young buck, not a shooter. Then another buck came out that was bigger and ran the younger one off. Then a beautiful chocolate horned 8pt that was even bigger came out below me. I watched him and then he left to the south. About 9:45 I'm dinking on my phone and look down and an even bigger buck is headed down the draw below me. It only took a second for me to say to myself, " I'm shooting this one". So I did. He's a typical 8 with a sticker and crab so I'm calling him a 10pt.
300 acres low fence native buck that's pretty good for our area. He's gonna' go on the wall. Our deer population has really expanded in the past few years due to all the improvements we've made. No does shot. Adding water troughs throughout and selective harvesting have made the difference, along with like minded neighbors. I guess I'm the official cocktail maker from here on out. My friend Marc, (Pitchfork predator) is going to post pics for me. Thanks, Marc.

An old Remington 270. Bad part is that I choked and shot a hole in his antler which blew out the back and went through his ear. I think the taxi can patch the antler but not sure about the ear. I haven't had buck fever in a while but I did today. Very exciting to say the least. I could sleep in tomorrow but will probably go sit in the stand. My season is over except for hogs. Still fun watching those deer during the rut.

Thanks guys. Pics didn't come out real good. I've been watching 2 bucks that are even bigger. Not sure where they came from. Hopefully get my brother on one this weekend. Deer are going berserk here. Chasing, grunting, it's crazy.

Really beautiful buck! Congrats!
Was the shot through the antler the kill shot?

Cool buck, the bullet damage is kind of neat, i would probably leave it that way.

My nephew had been shooting hogs with the old bolt action 270 I leave in the stand behind the house. He had replaced the Remington core-loct with Fiochi ammo and didn't resite the gun. Amateur mistake.

Congratulations on a fine buck! I would leave the damage! There will always be a story behind that, ha ha!
